About the course
About the 2024 Rio Maior Europe Triathlon - World Triathlon Para Triathlon Camp:
The Para triathlon horizon project 2032 is an innovative and unique opportunity to:
● Create global awareness.
● Enhance the development of Para triathlon.
● Create para parity through an athlete centred and coach supported approach.
● Develop social engagement and mentoring opportunities.
● Make life better through Para sports.
We aim to guide and build structure within new flag countries and strengthen and secure the health of tier 2 and tier 3 countries. We aim to achieve this through a process of engaging, enabling, empowering, and educating athletes and coaches through formal education, live practical experience and mentorship.
Key to this will be the power of the camp to connect athletes, coaches, and support personnel and to develop and grow our sport in a psychologically safe and nurturing environment. We encourage athletes form more established federations to apply and avail of the camp opportunity to champion our sport and to inspire and mentor the next generation of Paralympians.
This project intends to provide financial support (limited to travel and accommodation costs) to attend a Para Triathlon Development Camp in Rio Maior, Portugal and the subsequent nearby World Triathlon Para Cup Event in Alhandra, Portugal, from October 3rd to October 13th, 2024.
The camp will include seven days of structured, bespoke training sessions at Rio Maior sports centre and will conclude with a subsequent, nearby racing opportunity at the Alhandra World Triathlon Para Cup on October the 12th and Alhandra Europe Para triathlon Continental Cup on October the 13th, 2024, subject to entry via the World triathlon entry system and processes.
Coach education will be provided to coaches through the delivery of World Triathlon’s Para triathlon coaching course along with live coaching experience through the delivery of key coaching sessions.
A World Triathlon classification opportunity is being planned for athletes with a physical impairment in alignment with this camp on October the 9th and 10th (TBC)
Para triathletes and coaches will have daily access to:
● 1 hour Gym
● 2 hour 50m pool
● 2 hour 400m synthetic track
● Auditorium
● Bike storage
Europe Triathlon intends to make (partial) funding available to para triathletes and coaches of National Federations who wish to apply to attend the above-described para triathlon development camp and race event. An eligible National Federation may receive financial support to send up to 2 para triathletes and up to 1 coach to the para triathlon development camp and subsequent races.
Funding applications should include a long-term athlete development plan for both the applying Para triathlete(s) and also more generally for their respective National Federation. Eligible National Federations are the following:
1. National Federations which currently do not have Para triathletes competing.
2. National Federation who may have only one of two Para triathletes competing internationally (Tier 2/3)
3. New Flag Federations as identified in the supporting funding criteria document.
Funding is limited and all applications will be evaluated, and financial support offered based on the strength of the application.
An ad hoc evaluation panel of para coaches and European development committee members will evaluate and award funding, based on a set of criteria and guidelines reflecting the above, and weighted towards those National Federations who meet the criteria and show long term athlete development planning for both their Para triathletes and their National Federation as we move towards the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris, and those beyond (Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032).
Funding applications will only be considered if duly, timely and completely submitted in the attached funding application form, and must be clearly detailed and include a budget breakdown (for both the camp and the race event) and full details on how the requested funds will be used.
Applications must be supported by and made through the National Federation. All applications must be submitted by email to Marc D’hooge (Secretary, ETU Development Committee) via the following E-Mail address: dhoogemarcetu@gmail.com.
