Kropkó and Maksimava crowned Aquathlon world champions in Pontevedra

The 2025 World Triathlon Aquathlon World Championships delivered a thrilling day of racing in Pontevedra, with athletes taking to the continuous swim–run race course, in spectacular fashion, across the Age-Group, Elite, U23, Junior and Para categories.

Hungary’s Márton Kropkó produced a commanding performance to take the elite men’s world title, adding to his U23 gold in a memorable double victory. Spain’s Damian Suarez Couto impressed the home crowd with a strong silver medal showing and also captured junior men’s gold, while Christopher Perham of Great Britain rounded out the elite men’s podium.

“I am fully satisfied, especially because I had a pretty nasty crash last week and I am happy that I can be back fully healthy. I was leading the swim and the run, it was hard to know if I was running the right pace but I am happy it turned out in the end that I am on the top,” said Kropkó.

“Well to be honest I prefer to run after the bike but since my best discipline is swimming, I like to for Aquathlons and for me I like to go full gas and no thinking,” the Hungarian athlete added.

In the elite women’s race, Hanna Maksimava, competing under the AIN flag, stormed home to claim the elite women’s world championship. Spain’s Marina Muñoz Hernando secured silver in front of an ecstatic local audience, while Hungary’s Jázmin Kropkó added to the family success with a brilliant bronze and the 2025 junior women’s world title.

“I am very happy to win here. This is my first time in Pontevedra and the city where I got my first World Championship title, I am very happy,” said Maksimava.

It was very hard. I like to run and I am very strong and I ran fast and I am happy.” she added.

The U23 women’s podium saw Christina Durbin of Great Britain earn gold, followed by Anita Ghelardoni of Italy with silver and Elsa Peña Vicente of Spain earning bronze.

Spain continued its strong showing in the junior category, with Lucas Riola Delgado and Lucía Castelló Blasco stepping onto the podium with silver in their respective categories. Mexico’s Pablo Joel Calderón García and Slovakia's Viviana Popovičová also impressed with bronze medals in the junior men’s and junior women’s races.
