Best of 2014: Jorgensen's historic Chicago performance

Gwensanity exploded to another level of excellence this year when Gwen Jorgensen became the winningest female in World Triathlon Series history. While her hunt for her first World Championship title began early in the season, Chicago marked the first cornerstone moment of the year in women’s WTS racing when the American surpassed Emma Moffatt and Paula Findlay as the winningest female to compete in the Series.

But it wasn’t an easy win for eventual World Champ, as she had major ground to make up after hitting the pavement more than a minute behind the leaders off the bike right when the mid-day temperatures soared. Jorgensen paid no attention to the high sun and instead fired up the quads to hunt down the likes of Helen Jenkins and Juri Ide.

It took Jorgensen a little over half the run, but by the third lap it was clear that her signature run speed would lead her home to a history-making sixth WTS win. She’d collect two more before the season was done, but that run on home soil was by far one of the most memorable moments of 2014.
