World Triathlon

Aurélien Raphael of France is the new junior men’s BG Triathlon world champion, winning today with a time of 53 minutes and 43 seconds.  Defending champion Alistair Brownlee of Great Britain came from behind to take silver.  France dominated the podium with gold and bronze as Raphael’s teammate Vincent Luis finished with the bronze.

A strong field of 82 junior men took the start line in downtown Hamburg.  For much of the bike leg, a lead pack of five that included the two French athletes set the pace.  They headed out onto the run together but Raphael broke away early and built a 22-second lead after the first lap.  He held onto it without any problems and crossed the line to become the first Frenchman world junior champion since Frederic Belaubre in 2000.  Down 53 seconds at the start of the run, Brownlee looked out of contention but ran himself into the silver medal position with one of the faster run splits of the day.  With Luis taking the bronze, it marks the first time France has had multi-medalists in the junior men’s division of the world championships.

El francés Aurélien Raphael es el nuevo campeón del mundo Junior de Triatlón BG en la categoría masculina, consiguiendo la victoria hoy con un tiempo de 53 minutos y 43 segundos. El defensor del campeonato que Alistair Brownlee de Gran Bretaña quedó segundo consiguiendo la plata. Francia dominó el podium con el oro de Raphael y el bronce de su compañero de equipo Vincent Luis.

Ochenta y dos hombres tomaron la salida en el centro de Hamburgo. En la mayor parte del segmento de la bicicleta, un grupo en cabeza de cinco atletas entre los que había dos franceses, pusieron el ritmo. Ellos salieron juntos en el segmento de la carrera pero Rápale pronto se separaría y crearía una ventaja de 22 segundos después de la primera vuelta. Él mantendría esa ventaja sin ningún problema y cruzaría la línea de meta convirtiéndose en el primer campeón del mundo júnior desde que en el 2000 lo consiguiese Belaubre. Tras los 53 segundos de desventaja con los que partía al inicio del segmento de la carrera, Brownlee parecía fuera de la lucha pero corrió a por la medalla de plata con con uno de los segmentos de carrera más rápidos del día. Con Luis consiguiendo el bronce, hace que sea la primera vez que Francia obtenga varias medallas en la categoría júnior masculina de los campeonatos del mundo.
