World Triathlon's mission is to provide continuous training and learning opportunities for coaches willing to invest in their professional development and continuous education. Starting in 2025, World Triathlon Development will launch two new CPD courses each year, featuring live webinars led by prominent triathlon keynote speakers. The first of these, the World Triathlon Training Volume Guidelines for Young Athletes CPD Course concluded on 21 May.
Addressing a common coaching challenge - how to develop an appropriate transfer of elite-level training models to young athletes and how to minimise the risk of injuries, burnout, and premature dropout, the course provided a clear framework for planning age-appropriate training volumes based on physiological, psychological, and social development. Through evidence-based modules and real-world case studies, participants learned how to optimise long-term performance while reducing the risk of overtraining and supporting athlete well-being.
Keynote speakers brought diverse expertise to each online presentation, providing insights into coaching younger athletes.
- Tibor Lehmann (HUN) shared a holistic approach to junior triathlon training, focusing on movement literacy and personal development.
- Kristina Skroče (CRO) highlighted the importance of psychosocial support and athlete autonomy.
- Roberto Cejuela (ESP) presented pathways from junior to elite levels, emphasising progressive volume planning.
- Jonathan Esteve Lanao (MEX) offered insight into endurance and metabolic conditioning across age groups, advocating for informed, phase-based training design.
The course brought together 60 participants representing 39 different countries from all five continents. The global diversity of attendees underscores the international interest and relevance of structured training volume recommendations in coaching practices.
The course successfully initiated strong engagement across every continent, capturing a wide coaching network. Many participants are already demonstrating meaningful progress through active use of the course materials, marking a positive step in supporting coaches in athlete-centred planning and development.
The Training Volume Guidelines for Young Athletes CPD course will be available as an e-learning course on the TRI Education & Knowledge Hub from 1 July.
With more CPD opportunities scheduled throughout the year, World Triathlon Development and Education remains committed to equipping coaches with the knowledge and tools needed to guide the next generation of athletes. Stay tuned for World Triathlon Development announcements for the next live CPD course in November 2025.
