World Triathlon is looking for a Secretary General

World Triathlon is the international governing body for the Olympic sport of triathlon and all related multisport disciplines around the world, including duathlon, aquathlon, cross triathlon and winter triathlon. Triathlon made its Olympic debut in Sydney 2000, with a third medal event, the Mixed Team Relay, added to the programme at Tokyo 2020, while paratriathlon was first added to the Paralympic programme at Rio 2016. World Triathlon is proudly committed to the development of the sport worldwide, with inclusion, equality, sustainability and transparency at our core as we seek to help triathletes at all levels of the sport to be extraordinary. Headquartered in Lausanne with offices in Madrid and Vancouver, the Federation currently has 170 National Federations. World Triathlon is currently led by the President Antonio Fernandez Arimany, from Spain. Previously, he served as General Secretary until his election as President in October 2024. World Triathlon is currently looking for a new General Secretary.

The Position
The Secretary General will play a key role in the organization of World Triathlon. In coordination with the President, the Secretary General will provide leadership and management skills to implement a strategy that achieves the vision of World Triathlon globally. World Triathlon is seeking a leader, with significant experience and understanding the new commercial strategy of the organization, revenue generation, fan engagement and innovative content creation and distribution.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and retain talent through nurturing World Triathlon staff to help them realize their professional potential and continue to develop them.
  • Negotiate, close and co-sign agreements and provide support as needed to World Triathlon‘s legal counsel to resolve legal issues.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, the Constitution, Rules, Regulations and Codes. This included preparation of the Annual Reports for approval by the Executive Board and keeping the minutes of Congress and Executive Board meetings.
  • Undertake responsibilities and tasks within the approved budget, and limits of authority set by the Executive Board.
  • Share the elections at an Election Congress.

Key Skills & Attributes

  • University degree additional education is a plus.
  • Experience of up to 5 years in a senior management position in the sports or marketing world.
  • Authentic and visionary leader with high integrity, passion, energy, strong motivation and a “can do” mindset to achieve World Triathlon’s vision, mission, values and strategy.
  • Strong HR management and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively manage World Triathlon approximately 35 staff members based in its offices and working remotely across the globe.
  • Calm under pressure, decisive and adaptable, open, positive, with excellent interpersonal skills. Capable to inspire and command respect, while being a team player to work professionally with various stakeholders.
  • International, multi-cultural perspective and experience, with an appreciation for development opportunities in different areas and markets.
  • A person with cultural competency, as demonstrated by sensitivity to, and appreciation of, ethnic, cultural, gender and socio-economic diversity.
  • Ability to build relationships with national governing bodies, organizers, commercial bodies and a diverse set of athletes to understand their ongoing needs/concerns (including health and welfare of athletes).
  • Strengths in the areas of commercial approach, revenue generation, new business development and innovation.
  • Good knowledge of triathlon and of TRI’s operations.
  • Fluency in English, another language is a plus.
  • Willingness and ability to work in close collaboration with the President.
  • Dynamism and flexibility to change and adapt to new environments.
  • Adaptability to travel regularly around the world and among the three World Triathlon offices (Lausanne, Madrid, Vancouver).
