World Triathlon and Africa Triathlon sign landmark development agreement for 2025-2028

World Triathlon and Africa Triathlon have formalized a new four-year development agreement, set to run from 2025 to 2028, coinciding with the Los Angeles Olympic Quadrennial. This comprehensive agreement, championed by World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany, aims to strategically elevate triathlon and Para triathlon across the African continent.

The new framework required Africa Triathlon to develop a comprehensive four-year development strategy outlining their goals, objectives, and measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for 2025-2028.

Africa Triathlon will also develop a status analysis detailing their current standing and future aspirations by the end of 2028, as well as an annual development plan and budget for 2025, serving as the operational roadmap for the agreement's inaugural year.

The development strategy focuses on five key domains:

  • Sport & Administration Management, including Good Governance and Membership

  • Participation (Grassroots and Community Development)

  • Performance (Talent Development and High Performance)

  • Education (Capacity Building)

  • Events Development

A minimum of 10% of the funding will be dedicated to Para triathlon development initiatives, ensuring inclusivity and growth within the Para sport sector.

The agreement outlines specific activities for 2025, including:

  • Regional Development Cups in Maputo (Mozambique), Kilifi (Kenya), and Saly (Senegal).

  • Athlete and Coach Development programs, including talent development towards the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, establishing Team Africa composed of Olympic potential athletes, supporting the next generation through the junior ranking

  • Maximising IOC Olympic Solidarity funding opportunities to host World Triathlon Coach Certification Courses to increase coaching expertise and knowledge across the continent

  • Education and support for Technical Officials, with an additional target for female TOs, and to invest in the young generation of TOs, aiming for Dakar 2026 and beyond

  • Para triathlon technical support and education initiatives.

“This agreement marks a significant step forward in our commitment to developing triathlon and Para triathlon globally,” said World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany. 'By working closely with Africa Triathlon, we aim to empower National Federations, enhance athlete performance, and foster sustainable growth across the continent. The commitment to dedicating a minimum of 10% to Para triathlon ensures that we leave no one behind.”

Africa Triathlon President, General Ahmed Nasser added, “We are excited to partner with World Triathlon on this ambitious development plan. This agreement provides us with the resources and framework necessary to strengthen our sport at all levels, from grassroots participation to elite performance. Our focus will be on building strong governance, increasing participation, improving the quality of our events, and providing more opportunities for our athletes to compete on the world stage.'
