Team World Triathlon athletes up the ante in April

The athletes of Team World Triathlon have been increasingly active over the past month, racking up multiple medals and top-10 finishes at events around the world. As some eye up WTCS Yokohama as their next outing, find out the Team’s highlights from the past month below.

Double trouble in South Africa

Jawad Abdelmoula (MAR) became the Africa champion with a stellar performance in Nelson Mandela Bay. After riding as part of a breakaway, he promptly added the fastest run split of the day to regain the title he had previously won. Abdelmoula’s achievement was all the more impressive given that he has been back to full-time work as a firefighter since racing at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Joining him on the podium was his compatriot and fellow Team World Triathlon athlete Badr Siwane (MAR). Siwane’s 3rd place finish stands as one of his best showings over the past 12 months and will hopefully provide a launchpad for his 2025 campaign.

Santiago medals

Maria Carolina Velasquez Soto (COL) came out on top at the South Americas Championships and Americas Cup in Santiago. Her win over the sprint distance was a close affair, her final winning margin standing at only 1 second. More importantly, it came after a 2nd place at her season opener at the Americas Cup level, thus showing a step forward.

Diego Moya (CHI) earned the silver medal in the men’s race in Santiago. This was the first time the World Cup medallist had raced in 2025 and it took a late surge from WTCS medallist Manoel Messias (BRA) to deny him the gold. Next month Velasquez and Moya will be racing at WTCS Yokohama. The former only has two Series appearances to her name, while the latter has only raced five times at that level, the last of which came in Yokohama in 2024. Both will therefore look to improve upon their personal best WTCS finishes set in Montreal in 2023.

Hitting top-10s

Another Team athlete scheduled to race in Yokohama is Erica Hawley (BER). The Paris Olympian also raced in April, logging a 7th place finish at the Americas Cup in Miami. Notably, she was only 10 seconds away from making it onto the podium.

Aleksandr Kurishov (UZB) was likewise in action, taking 9th place at the Asia Cup in Pokhara over the past weekend having been one of the first men into T1. At the start of the month, Zuzana Michalickova (SVK) also recorded a 9th place finish, with hers coming at the Superti E World Championships.
