Matt Hauser gets title defence underway the golden way in Yokohama

As soon as the seven-deep breakaway pack found its groove early in the men's 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series Yokohama - Matt Hauser, two teammates and a fired-up Miguel Hidalgo among them - the writing was on the wall for the rest of the field - even Olympic Champion Alex Yee.

Hauser and Brayden Mercer were drilling the swim, then soon enjoying life along with teammate Luke Willian across the 40km bike, gaining time over the chasers with each of the ten laps as Yee's chances increasingly evaporated in the Japanese sunshine. Hidalgo and Hauser took things clear on the run, Willian fought back only to be dropped and dangle in front of the marauding Yee who had passed breakaway teammate Max Stapley. But as Hauser pushed into one final gear and took it away from the Brazilian, Willian was able to dig deep and hold firm for bronze, Norway's Vetle Thorn in fourth.

With the unusually low-numbered Hauser, Hidalgo and Chase McQueen still able to find each other in the middle of the pontoon, the pace was more expectedly on from the horn, another Australian Brayden Mercer taking his duties at the front of the swim, Hauser on his feet.

Blake Bullard (USA) was also flying on debut , and it was he, Max Stapley (GBR) and Vetle Thorn (NOR) joining the front trio of Australians into transition and out onto the 40km bike.

Alex Yee was 37 seconds back onto his bike, but as the front powerhouses pulled together and found their groove, so the chasers' efforts appeared to fracture, shelling between 10-15 seconds with each lap as they hoovered up the American.

The gap was out to 1m45s as the second pack racked their rides, Yee hitting his stride quickly and setting his sights on the 6 men ahead. Stapley and Mercer were his first victims, while just as it looked like Willian had faltered up ahead, he hauled himself back to Hidalgo and Hauser as they began to run prep for a big finish.

As the third lap saw things hot up again, Willian fell back, then at the start of lap four, Hauser set out his stall and began to pull clear of Hidalgo. The Brazilian couldnt respond in kind, and the final 2km was the Hauser show, the roar at the line showing exactly how much a return win meant to him. Hidalgo was back in business after Samarkand's DNF to take silver, Willian collapsing over the line for a hard-earned bronze.

Thorn hold on for a career-best fourth from Yee, Brayden Mercer likewise in sixth, Martin Sobey, Jack Willis, Tim Hellwig and Braxton Legg rounding out the top 10.
