Luke Willian dominates the blue carpet in Chengdu

One second. That's all that separated gold from silver at the 2026 World Triathlon Cup Chengdu — and just one more second back stood the bronze. Australia's Luke Willian claimed gold, holding off a fierce charge from France's Nils Serre Gehri, who crossed just one second later in second place — his first-ever World Cup podium. Canada's Tyler Mislawchuk rounded out the podium with his trademark finishing speed proving decisive once again. Three athletes, three seconds, one unforgettable finish.

The third stop of the 2026 World Triathlon Cup circuit brought 65 elite men to the pontoon in Jintang District, Chengdu, China that once again delivered a race for the ages.

How the race unfolded

The race began with a massive field charging into the water, led by France’s Igor Dupuis, who clocked the fastest swim of the day at 00:08:42. Dupuis managed to open a 10-second gap over the chasers by the time he reached his bike, but the advantage was quickly neutralized by a group of strong swimmers including Max Stapley (GBR), Brayden Mercer (AUS), Dario Wickihalter (SUI), and Nicola Azzano (ITA). This lead pack eventually merged into a sprawling group that included almost the entire field, leaving only Sullivan Middaugh of the USA struggling at the back after a difficult swim.

As the athletes transitioned to the technical four-lap bike course, the focus shifted to tactical positioning and energy conservation. While the course was fast, the massive pack of 64 athletes meant that navigating the turns safely was paramount. The big peloton remained largely together, with the fastest bike split of the day eventually credited to Itamar Levanon (ISR). Knowing the race would be decided on foot, the athletes prepared for the final 5km surge as they entered the second transition area.

Luke Schofield (AUS) was the first to ignite the run leg, leading a group that included Antonio Serrat Seoane (ESP) and Nathan Grayel (FRA). However, the real move came from the back of the lead pack as Luke Willian (AUS), Tyler Mislawchuk (CAN), and Callum McClusky (AUS) began picking off competitors one by one.

In the final kilometer, Willian applied a blistering pace that only Serre and Mislawchuk could sustain. Willian eventually found an extra gear on the blue carpet to secure the win, also setting the fastest run split of the day at 00:14:03.

Following the top three, Nathan Grayel finished fourth, followed by Callum McClusky in fifth, Antonio Serrat Seoane in sixth, Brayden Mercer in seventh, and Liam Donnelly (CAN) rounding out the top eight.

This victory for Luke Willian followed a string of consistent performances on the world stage, solidifying his reputation as a top-tier finisher. For Nils Serre Gehri, the performance was a significant milestone, coming only two years after he was crowned the junior world champion. Meanwhile, Tyler Mislawchuk, a veteran of the sport known for his prowess in sprint finishes, successfully signaled his return to top form by landing on the podium in his very first race of the 2026 season.
