While ITU took time to reflect and celebrate a storied 25 years of triathlon history if Avignon, France this weekend, it also presented the opportunity for the ITU Executive Board to hold its final meeting of the year.
As announced on Monday, an important decision to come out of these two-day meetings was the decision to award Mexico and Rotterdam the 2016 and 2017 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, respectively.

Additional important governance issues were discussed, including appointing new Board members, creating new committees and volunteer positions, revising anti-doping rules, revisiting rules and paratriathlon classifications, approving calendars, debating disciplines and improving communication between ITU and its Continental Confederations and National Federations.
It was also an opportunity for French-speaking Federations to join together to form the Francophonie Triathlon Federation with the goal to strengthen cooperation between more established and developing National Federations in order to grow the sport globally. In the same vein, ITU’s First Vice President Sarah Springman provided an update on the progress of the Association of Commonwealth Triathlon that was formed following the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
