5 Tips from Javier Gómez Noya for racing in Pontevedra

Hola! I’m Javier Gómez Noya and I couldn’t be prouder to welcome the world to my hometown of Pontevedra for the 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships. As someone who grew up training and racing here, I want to share a few personal tips to help you make the most of your experience, both on and off the course.

1. Know the terrain
Pontevedra’s courses are spectacular, but they’re not easy. You’ll encounter a bit of everything: city streets, river paths and hilly terrain out near Pontillón do Castro. If you can, prepare on similar terrain back home. Practising your technical skills will really help you feel more comfortable on race day.

2. Train your mind, not just your body
The physical prep is only half the battle. I’ve learnt over the years that mental strength is what really gets you through the toughest moments. Visualise the race, prepare for setbacks and remind yourself why you’re here, it makes a difference.

3. Prepare for changeable weather
June in Galicia can be a bit unpredictable. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s drizzling. Be ready for a mix of conditions, pack layers and make sure your gear can handle wet roads or trails. It’s all part of the challenge!

4. Soak up the crowd support
There’s something really special about racing in Pontevedra. The local crowd loves triathlon and you’ll feel that energy all along the course. Let it lift you. Smile, soak it in and use it as fuel when the going gets tough.

5. Enjoy the local flavour
Don’t just race, experience the city. Pontevedra has so much to offer. Wander the old town, grab some “pulpo a feira” (Galician-style octopus) and enjoy a stroll along the river. The atmosphere is incredible during Champs week, so take it all in and make some memories.

Best of luck in your races, I’ll be cheering you on. ¡Vamos Pontevedra!
