World Triathlon Development and Education in conjunction with the Korea Triathlon Federation have officially launched the fifth edition of the World Triathlon Coaching Education Programme. This programme continues to play an integral role in World Triathlon’s Coaching Education landscape for developing nations since 2017. There is no other global project similar to the World Triathlon Coaching Education Programme. 2021 saw World Triathlon Development and Education deliver the programme in a new online and completely virtually format and in 2022, the programme will be once again conducted online. One of the real values of the programme is global accessibility. Participants get to know different cultures, lifestyles, mindsets and provided with the opportunity to expand their networks, learn about the strengths and challenges of their peers from other countries and continents.

Representatives from World Triathlon including Marisol Casado, World Triathlon President and IOC Member, along with stakeholders from Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea, Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, Korea Sports Promotion Foundation and the Korea Triathlon Federation met virtually to officially open the 2022 World Triathlon Coaching Education Programme.

Emma Carney, two-time World Triathlon Champion and member of the World Triathlon Development and Education team, formally opened the virtual meeting of programme stakeholders.

“Welcome to the Korea Triathlon Federation - World Triathlon Coaching Education Programme. What makes this program a standout is that it creates a unique learning environment bringing together coach candidates, coaches and coaching facilitators from all around the world in one place to learn and share World leading Triathlon coaching,” Emma Carney said.

The Programme creates a unique learning environment bringing together coach candidates, coaches and coaching facilitators from all around the world in one place to learn and share World leading Triathlon coaching. The project aims to provide opportunities for developing nations to access coaching education in triathlon and attain coaching qualification by World Triathlon at two levels: World Triathlon Level 1 Coach and World Triathlon Level 2 Coach.

Marisol Casado, World Triathlon President and IOC Member, stated that World Triathlon is committed to developing Triathlon and its Multisports worldwide and that coaches play a key role in this development.

“Coaches play an essential role in this process from the club and national coaches to Olympian coaches around the world. Last year the Korea Triathlon - World Triathlon Coaching Education Programme was a milestone in our coach education history as it gave us an excellent opportunity to pilot our newly designed virtual delivery forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Today more than one hundred coaches representing forty-two National Federations from five continents are ready to start or level up their coaching skills and knowledge via the World Triathlon Education and Knowledge Hub. Thirty-five percent of the participants are female candidates strengthening the voices of women and having a positive impact on others.

“Thank you to our member National Federations for their continuous support and dedication to coaching education and development in general. Thank you to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Korea, Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, Korea Sports Promotion Foundation and the Korea Triathlon Federation for funding this unique and extraordinary project,” said Marisol Casado, World Triathlon President and IOC Member.

Facts about the Coaching Education Programme:
• A total number of graduated coaches (2017-2021): 250 (including L1 and L2 certified coaches) from 64 nations all over the world.
• There is a great proportion of women coaches accredited each year
• There is great global accessibility and diversity among those involved.
• The encouragement of returning coaches to continue their education and development
• 2020 cancelled due to the pandemic, 2022 is the second time this course will be conducted online.
• This year the 2022 cohort has 109 participants (38 female - 35%) from 42 countries, broken into two cohorts:
• Level 1: 30 participants (14 female) from 15 countries
• Level 2: 54 participants (19 female) from 31 countries
• CPD: 25 participants (5 female) from 16 countries

World Triathlon acknowledged that to their additional financial support, they are about to introduce the coaching profile tool on the Education Hub which will enable the team:
• To provide coaches with continuous feedback on their professional development.
• To identify knowledge and competence gaps which would be the basis of individual development recommendations.
• To use profile data for selection and eligibility.
