Edmonton joins the ITU Mixed Relay Series in 2019

ITU is pleased to announce that Edmonton has confirmed that they will host a leg of the 2019 ITU Mixed Relay Series, along with the World Triathlon Series taking place in July in the Canadian city.

The second edition of the Mixed Relay Series will have five stops in 2019, including the World Championships that will take place once again in Hamburg, Germany. Abu Dhabi will be the first stop of the series in 2019, with teams competing again in Nottingham (UK), Edmonton (Canada) and Tokyo (Japan).

“We are delighted with Edmonton hosting once again not only a World Triathlon Series, but also a Mixed Relay race, showing their commitment to the format, that will make its Olympic debut in Tokyo 2020, only a few weeks before the same city, Edmonton, hosts the ITU Grand Final in 2020”, said ITU President and IOC Member, Marisol Casado.

“We know that athletes and spectators love this format, and by having the teams racing in Edmonton as they did last year we are giving the Nations more opportunities to secure more points in the Olympic Qualification rankings, making it a thrilling event for television, sponsors, spectators and the top elite athletes from everywhere in the world”, she said.

Edmonton has been a staple city on the ITU calendar for many years, hosting the World Championships in 2001 and 2014, and is getting ready to host the event for the third time in 2020. On top of that, the city was also the site of nine world cup events, and has hosted a stop on the World Triathlon Series since 2015 until now.

“We are very excited to host the Mixed Relay once again,” said World Triathlon Edmonton President Sheila O‘Kelly. “After the success and learnings from the 2018 event, we are committed to showcasing this new and exciting format to the masses and are proud to be the only Mixed Relay stop in the Americas.”
