At age eight he had his left leg amputated below the knee because of a congenital malformation.
Start of sporting career
He took up para-triathlon in 1993.
Reason for taking up this sport
He first practised all three sports separately, and was inspired to try a triathlon after a friend suggested he might not be capable of it. “Once, I was talking to a triathlete and told him about my dream to start competing in triathlon. He said, ‘You know, with your impairment, I think it would be too hard.’ A few months later I finished my first triathlon.”
