World Triathlon Named Finalist for IOC Climate Action Awards 2025

World Triathlon has been announced as one of the 15 finalists for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Climate Action Awards 2025, a global recognition of organisations and individuals driving meaningful environmental change across the Olympic Movement. The awards shine a light on those leveraging sport’s unique power to inspire climate action and help build a more sustainable future.

The IOC revealed the list of finalists on 6 November, honouring innovative projects that translate commitment into measurable actions. Now in their third year, the awards spotlight the growing collaboration and creativity shaping a greener sporting ecosystem and reflect the commitment to create a sustainable future not only for sport, but for society as a whole.

Fifteen finalists were selected across three categories: athletes, National Olympic Committees (NOCs), and International Federations (IFs). World Triathlon was selected for its Sustainable Event Certification programme, a comprehensive approach to embedding sustainability principles across its operations and events that provides event organisers around the world with a standardised framework through which to achieve greater environmental responsibility.

'We are delighted to have been recognised by the IOC for our groundbreaking approach to ensuring that care for the environment underpins World Triathlon's events. There is no single solution for all our LOCs around the globe, so the fact that the project has had such a significant, quantifiable impact on their sustainability efforts is testament to the detail and thought that has gone into it, and to the collaborative approach that is at the heart of our work,' said World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany.

Launched to improve its environmental accountability, the certification requires event organisers to assess and report emissions while adopting targeted measures to reduce their overall footprint. These include waste reduction, responsible sourcing, water management, and low-carbon transport solutions, helping to ensure its events contribute to World Triathlon's sustainability goals.

The ultimate objective is to empower events to achieve climate neutrality and to make sustainability inseparable from triathlon’s identity as a global sport. Fostering collaboration between local organisers, athletes, and host communities it has helped LOCs to make tangible steps toward carbon reduction and climate awareness and track their progress year after year. By integrating sustainability into the sport’s calendar in this way, World Triathlon has set a benchmark for environmentally conscious event delivery.

“As the impacts of climate change touch every corner of the world, sport has a unique power to inspire collaboration and mobilise action,' said Marie Sallois, the IOC’s Corporate and Sustainable Development Director. 'The quality of this year’s projects truly reflects our commitment to creating a more sustainable future – not only for sport, but for society as a whole.”

The winners of the 2025 Climate Action Awards will be announced ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.
