World Triathlon is pleased to announce that its President, Marisol Casado, who has served as an IOC member since 2010, has been elected as an Honorary Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Marisol's election underscores her significant contributions to the Olympic movement and triathlon as a sport.
Mrs. Casado will step down from her position as World Triathlon President on April 22, 2025, just six months after the elections which saw Antonio F. Arimany elected as the new World Triathlon President. This change marks a new chapter for World Triathlon under Arimany’s leadership while celebrating Marisol’s legacy and ongoing commitment to the Olympic movement.
The IOC Session in Greece was particularly historic as it also saw Kirsty Coventry elected as the new IOC President, making her the first woman to hold this prestigious position. President Elect Coventry received 49 votes in the first round, meeting the required majority from 97 ballots cast. She will officially assume office on Olympic Day, June 23, after a handover from the current President, Thomas Bach, who has led the IOC since 2013. Following the transition, President Bach will resign as an IOC Member and will take on the role of Honorary President.
In addition to Marisol's election, the IOC Session also recognized two other distinguished members nearing the end of their terms. Effective April 22, 2025, Mrs. Casado (Spain), whose IOC membership has been linked to her presidency of World Triathlon since her election in 2010, will be honored for her service.
World Triathlon takes pride in the strides being made for female representation in the Olympic movement and looks forward to supporting President Elect Coventry as she leads the IOC into a new era of progress and empowerment.
