World Cup returns to China's Triathlon cathedral

The World Triathlon Cup returns to Chengdu, China, on Saturday 9 May as Jintang's purpose-built triathlon venue plays host to one of the most exciting women's fields of the early season. Sixty-five elite women line up from 11am local time, with the defending champion, the reigning T100 world champion making her return to the World Triathlon circuit, a trio of in-form WTCS performers and a cast of rising names all targeting gold in southern China.

Valentina Riasova (AIN) arrives in Chengdu as the woman to beat, having stormed to gold here in 2025 with a devastating late surge on the run to claim her first ever World Cup victory. The margin was just six seconds in a photo-finish involving five women, but Riasova's composure in the closing kilometre was decisive. Whether she can do it again against a field that includes several WTCS-level names who were absent twelve months ago is the central question of Saturday afternoon.

The biggest name on the women's start list may not be wearing the number one bib, but she is wearing the world champion's crown. Kate Waugh (GBR) arrives in Chengdu for her first race back on the World Triathlon Cup circuit after one of the most dominant seasons the T100 World Tour has ever seen. The 26-year-oldwon six of her seven T100 races in 2025 — including the season opener in Singapore and the finale in Qatar — to claim the T100 World Championship title in one of the sport's great breakthrough performances. This year, a calf injury forced her to miss March's Gold Coast T100 opener, and Chengdu is where she makes her competitive return, stepping back onto a World Cup start line she has not stood on since her early career. The question is how quickly she can rediscover the speed, positioning and tactical nous that the sprint format demands after months away from this specific discipline.

Sian Rainsley (GBR) will wear bib number 1 with genuine justification. The 29-year-old had an encouraging start to the 2026 season, claiming bronze at the Haikou World Cup in March. That result confirmed that Rainsley, who has fought through serious illness to reach the top level, is in the form of her life heading into the Chinese spring. She is one of the most versatile athletes on the circuit and, on a flat, fast run course like Jintang's, she will be dangerous.

Laura Lindemann (GER) is perhaps the most decorated athlete on the women's start list. The Paris 2024 Olympic relay champion and three-time WTCS podium finisher had a difficult 2025 season interrupted by injury, but has been quietly building back towards her best in 2026. A bronze at the Lanzarote World Cup in March — her first international start in ten months — was an encouraging sign, and Lindemann was also in the front group at WTCS Samarkand two weeks ago, showing she has lost none of her trademark positioning and race intelligence. A course like Chengdu, which rewards technical bike riding and a measured run, could suit her well as she continues her comeback. Germany also sends Selina Klamt, the former World U23 champion and a consistent presence on the circuit, and Franka Rust, who made her first World Cup podium in 2025 and is considered one of the sport's most serious breakout candidates for 2026.

Sara Guerrero Manso (ESP) has a special relationship with this venue. The Spaniard from Pontevedra claimed bronze here in 2025, a result that capped a remarkable year in which she collected World Cup hardware of every colour. She ended the season with a win at the Florianópolis World Cup in November and has spoken openly about her ambitions to build towards WTCS success and, ultimately, LA 2028. Explosive in a sprint finish and increasingly confident at the front of races, Guerrero Manso is one of the most compelling names to watch in a field where she has already shown she belongs on the podium.

Australia's Sophie Malowiecki arrives in Chengdu carrying the confidence of a first-ever World Cup podium, claimed in Haikou in March when she pushed eventual winner Isakova all the way before taking silver. A strong swimmer who is rediscovering her best form at the right time of year, Malowiecki has the tools to go one better in Jintang. Australia also sends Tara Sosinski, the dominant winner of the 2026 Oceania Championships in Devonport, and Ellie Hoitink, a resilient performer who has been steadily building on the international scene.

No preview of the Chengdu women's race would be complete without a mention of Xinyu Lin. The Chinese athlete has made this venue something of a personal mission, finishing fourth here in 2024 — the best ever result by a Chinese woman at this level — before returning in 2025 to race in the front group once more. Racing in front of her home crowd in Jintang, with thousands of cheering fans lining the parkland, Lin will be desperate to finally convert that consistent near-podium form into a medal. Few scenarios would produce a louder roar from the Jintang faithful.

France's Lea Coninx is a seasoned campaigner who knows the demands of racing on the World Cup circuit in heat and humidity, while Canada's Sophia Howell has been one of the most improved athletes on the Americas circuit and announced herself with a first World Cup podium in Chile last year. Margot Garabedian (CAM) is a former French junior talent now racing for Cambodia who has consistently featured in front groups at this venue and cannot be overlooked. Finally, Hungary's Fanni Szalai (born 2008) is the youngest athlete on the start list and has already impressed at the senior Europe Cup level, as well as in her World Cup debut in Lanzarote earlier this year — keep an eye on how the teenager handles her second major World Cup field.

First-Ever Mixed Relay World Cup on Sunday

For the first time in World Triathlon history, a Mixed Relay Cup will be contested on Sunday 10 May, starting at 14:00 local time. It marks a significant landmark for the format at World Cup level and adds a compelling second day to an already packed weekend in Jintang. Start lists for the Mixed Relay will be made public on Saturday afternoon once the individual racing is complete.
