Valuable Para triathlon points on the line as San Pedro de la Paz hosts final Para Cup of 2025

In a finale that could reshape the Para triathlon rankings landscape, the San Pedro de la Paz Para Cup capped off the 2025 Para triathlon season as the seventh stop. Marking the circuit’s first stop in South America, the event offered American Para triathletes and others a last chance to rack up crucial ranking points just as the season drew to a close.

The race unfolded in a city nestled between the Biobío River and the Pacific Ocean, with Laguna Grande serving as a calm, spectator-friendly stage that drew a mix of seasoned veterans and rising stars fresh off the World Championships in Wollongong.

PTVI
The visually impaired category proved highly competitive, with four athletes and their guides toeing the line. In the men’s race, Abel Torreblanca of Spain demonstrated remarkable early control and maintained leadership from start to finish, crossing the line with a margin of more than two minutes ahead of Chile’s Yunerki Ortega Ponce, the silver medalist. Spain’s Kevin Mendez Martinez completed the podium in third.

In the women’s PTVI race, Gulnaz Zhuzbaeva of Kyrgyzstan—recently crowned Asian Para Triathlon champion—displayed commanding dominance from the outset, finishing atop the standings. Argentina’s Nadia Soledad Baez rounded out the podium in second, adding another chapter to a field that showcased depth across the region.

PTWC
The PTWC division offered a Chilean showdown, featuring the country’s two top wheelchair athletes. The younger competitor, Benjamin Bobadilla at 20 years old, seized victory on home soil, signaling his ambitious road toward LA Paralympic targets. His teammate Rodolfo Sanchez Landeros finished in silver, underscoring a strong national program and giving Chile two spots on the podium.

PTS5
In the PTS5 class, Antonio Goncalves Silva of Brazil continued his late-season surge, turning Wollongong’s bronze in the Mixed Relay into momentum with a gold in San Pedro. He finished more than six minutes ahead of USA’s Jesus Moreno, with Spain’s Damian Sanchez Vidal completing the podium after a determined run.

On the women’s side, Katherine Nahuelcura Avello and Valentina Múñoz Moreno, both from Chile, delivered decisive moves on the bike that earned Nahuelcura Avello the win and valuable Paralympic ranking points for both athletes.

PTS4
The men’s PTS4 race highlighted Team Brazil’s strength as Jorge Luis Fonseca used a strong swim to open a commanding gap over Bastían Berrios Valdivia of Chile, who finished second. In the women’s event, Rafaela Rojas of Chile claimed gold, while Spaniard Claudia Tubío Quintáns—youngest in the field—finished a close second after leading portions of the race.

PTS3
The PTS3 category featured a single entrant, Jonas Souza of Brazil, who nonetheless added important ranking points to his season ledger.
