After completing the Accreditation process of the Technical Officials’` National Education Programme (ATOEP), USA Triathlon conducted the first Technical Officials Level 1 Seminar in conjunction with the 2023 Americas Triathlon Cup Long Beach and 2023 World Triathlon Para Cup Long Beach events in Southern California. USA Triathlon’s Mark Turner and Reg Whatley delivered the historical course at the historical race venue, Alamitos Beach is the proposed site of the triathlon competitions for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Los Angeles 2028.
“Being recognised by World Triathlon accreditation is a major step forward in USA Triathlon’s long-term efforts to achieve alignment with global standards governing multisport,” said Mark Turner, USA Triathlon Commissioner of Officials. “This recognition positions USA Triathlon to help lead in the development and growth of multisport rules, rules enforcement, and officiating best practices. Many people helped pave the way to achieving this goal. Without the leadership, support, encouragement, and guidance of both USAT’s Vic Brumfield and World Triathlon’s Thanos Nikopoulos throughout this process, this goal would not have been realised. Many others also contributed to this effort. Too many to name but they know who they are and how much they have meant in this achievement.”
USA Triathlon earlier this year released the USA Triathlon 2023 Multisport Competition Rules, a comprehensive new ruleset that aligns USA Triathlon’s competition rules with the global standards set by World Triathlon.
By achieving World Triathlon ATOEP recognition, USA Triathlon improves the opportunity to submit a full slate of official nominees for the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and can now educate U.S. officials on pathway to working at international level competitions.
