Twenty years after making his first international appearance, Britain’s Jonathan Brownlee has called time on an illustrious triathlon career. From early on, Brownlee was a rising star in the sport. Bronze medals came at the 2008 World Junior Championships and European Junior Championships while he made a WTCS debut in its inaugural 2009 season.

His first Series medals arrived in 2010, as did the World U23 title, and before long Brownlee was at the pinnacle of the sport. Brownlee won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games as part of a brotherly double act alongside Alistair Brownlee that captivated the sporting world. The brothers were back on top in Rio de Janeiro four years later, with Jonathan upgrading his medal to silver behind his brother. In between, he claimed the WTCS title in 2012.

A total of 32 medals, of which 13 were gold, across Brownlee’s WTCS career sees him bow out as one of the most successful athletes ever in the sport. Only Alistair Brownlee, Mario Mola and Javier Gomez Noya have claimed more men’s victories. He also gave the sport one of its most memorable moments when he was assisted by his brother over the finish line at the 2016 WTCS Final in Cozumel.

Brownlee has not appeared in the WTCS since missing out on qualification to a fourth Olympic Games in 2024 and his final international race came at the 2025 Supertri E World Championships in London. Through his Brownlee Brothers foundation alongside his brother, though, he has increasingly taken a greater role away from the blue carpet and he will doubtless have a big role to play in the sport’s ongoing growth in Britain and beyond.
