Evening of July 14th, 2021 made its mark in the history of Lithuanian triathlon as a date of the inaugural edition of “Lithuanian women’s triathlon” hosted by the local ladies club Ironmama. In total, more than 100 ladies stepped on a starting line, many of whom were first timers.
The event kicked off with children (4 – 6 years old) race, which consisted of some water splashes followed by 1 km cycling leg and 300 m run loop. Moments after children’s race, the ladies started to gather by the starting line. Participants had to swim 100 m, cycle 5 000 m and run 1 500 m. Breathtaking event, surrounded by the historic landmarks of multicultural Lithuanian capital Vilnius, had Lithuanian national champions, European age group podium finishers in the startlists, yet the aim was to enjoy the magic moment.
Lithuanian Triathlon Federation’s President Saulius Batavičius with the welcoming speech thanked organizers and all the participants for the initiative, encouraged ladies to have a good and fair competition and of course invited all to further national triathlon championships and triathlon cup series events.
Lithuanian triathlon has a strong base of local age group competitions, by offering 5 stage triathlon cup events, national championships of numerous sub-disciplines and other individually organised multi-sport events. This year, each of the national cup stage unites more than 450 participants of various backgrounds. Yet women‘s field still considerably underrepresented. However, with initiatives such as „Women‘s triathlon“ it is believed that tiny steps towards balance will eventually become strides.
