Two big races this weekend with the PATCO Triathlon Championships set to go in Mazatlan, Mexico and the first ever Pontevedra ITU Premium European Cup where world number one Javier Gomez will race in his hometown. The elite men’s field also includes last year’s Duathlon world champion Paul Amey of Great Britain, reigning under23 world champion Gregor Bucholz of Germany and Belgian Peter Croes, Brit Oliver Freeman, currently both ranked inside the world top 20. But Gomez will be the man to watch and the man to beat as he enters Pontevedra with a pair of decisive victories Mooloolaba and New Plymouth. Click here for full men’s start list
In the elite women’s field, world champion Vanessa Fernandes will be the odds-on favorite to take the first Pontevedra title. The Portuguese star loves to race in Spain and has enjoyed tremendous success in her neighbouring country, having won the Madrid world cup title for five consecutive years. Spain will field a large roster that includes 2004 Olympians Ainhoa Murua and Pilar Hidalgo. Challenging for the podium will be Brit Rosie Clarke, last year’s under23 European champion. The Pontevedra ITU Triathlon Premium European Cup features a 25,000 EUR prize purse. Through the website of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, the Pontevedra event website will provide live timing, text and photos on race day, giving it the feel of a world cup. Click here for more information
Also this weekend, the Pan American Championships from Mazatlan, Mexico. In the elite women’s field, Canadian Lauren Groves kicks off her 2008 season. Bronze medalist at last year’s Pan American Games, Groves look for the top step of the podium this time around. Her biggest threats for the title will likely be Chilean up and comer Barbara Riveros Diaz and home favorite Adriana Fabiola Coruna of Mexico Click here for full women’s start list
In the men’s event, Jarrod Shoemaker of the United States is likely the pre-race favorite. The Beijing-bound Shoemaker is coming off a 13th place finish at the recent Ishigaki BG Triathlon World Cup. He posted the fifth fastest run split among the men in Ishigaki and will be eager to claim victory in Mazatlan this weekend. But not to be overlooked are Leonardo Chacon of Costa Rica and Javier Cuevas of the Dominican Republic, both members of Team BG Elite Athlete Development Programme who recently competed at Mooloolaba and New Plymouth. Dos grandes carreras tendrán lugar este fin de semana con los Campeonatos de Triatlón PATCO en Mazatlán, Méjico y la Copa de Europa Premium ITU que se disputará por primera vez en Pontevedra, en donde el número uno del mundo Javier Gómez correrá en su ciudad natal.
