Development at the Balkan Sprint Duathlon Championships

The future of triathlon was on display in Podgorica as Montenegro hosted a brilliant day of racing at the Balkan Sprint Duathlon Championships on 15 March 2026. Set against the unique backdrop of the vineyards of “13. jul Plantaže”, the event brought together athletes from across the Balkans and Europe in a celebration of performance, participation and development.

The programme featured the Balkan Sprint Duathlon Championships (5km run – 20km bike – 2.5km run), alongside the Montenegrin National Sprint Duathlon Championships, providing both international and domestic athletes with a valuable early-season racing opportunity.

A key highlight of the event was the inclusion of a Youth Festival, with children’s duathlon races held across three age categories (7–9, 10–12 and 13–15 years). The strong participation of young athletes from across the region added a powerful development dimension to the event, reinforcing the importance of creating accessible and engaging entry points into the sport.

In total, nearly 230 athletes from 20 countries took part, with a notably high proportion of U23 competitors. This reflects the continued growth of triathlon in the region and the increasing strength of the development pathway, as emerging athletes gain valuable race experience in a competitive international environment.

The event also marked the opening race of the 2026 Balkan Triathlon Association calendar, which will feature 11 events across eight countries throughout the year. As such, it played an important role in setting the tone for a season focused on regional collaboration and athlete development.

President of the Triathlon Federation of Montenegro, Draško Milić, highlighted the significance of the event:

“This Balkan Sprint Duathlon Championship represents one of the most important events for our sport since the beginning of the Federation’s work. The large turnout of competitors is very encouraging, and it provided an excellent opportunity for both international and domestic athletes to compete and gain valuable experience.

Particularly important is the strong participation of young athletes. With two-thirds of participants aged 23 or younger, this sends a very positive message about the future of our sport.”

The successful delivery of the event was made possible through the collaboration of Triathlon Club Podgorica and the Triathlon Federation of Montenegro, supported by dedicated partners and volunteers.

By combining elite competition, national championships and youth racing within one event, Montenegro has delivered a strong example of how regional competitions can drive both performance and participation — strengthening the foundations of triathlon development across the Balkans.
