A first major win of the season for a Paris Olympic medallist headlined the racing over the past weekend. Find out all that went down in this week’s Monday Morning Mix.
T100 Vancouver
Julie Derron (SUI) came away with the gold medal in Vancouver, the Paris silver medallist overhauling T100 world champion Kate Waugh (GBR) on the run thanks to a field-best 18km split of 1:04:19. Taylor Spivey (USA) had set the early tempo in the water, emerging from the 2km with a 2 second lead over Waugh (23:59 to 24:01). It was Waugh that then turned the screws on the bike.
Derron, meanwhile, had conceded almost 90 seconds to the leaders in the first discipline and languished outside the top-10, but she set to work making up the deficit. Come the run, she was within a minute of race-leader Waugh and went on to power to the gold by 1:40. Rounding out the podium was Georgia Taylor-Brown (GBR) as she managed to get past the day’s top cyclist, Canada’s Paula Findlay (2:01:13). View the full results here.
Europe Junior Cup Chisinau
In Romania, Latvia’s Beate Jansone led from gun to tape to back up her Baltic Championships title with another gold medal. Over the super sprint format, Jansone got off to a flying start. She clocked 6:14 to lead the 400m swim by 1 second from runner-up Vittoria Falco (ITA). A field-leading T1 bought Jansone some more breathing space before she scooted clear on the bike, earning a head start of over 40 seconds starting the run.
Falco and Evamaria Albert (EST) were the quickest of the chasers and pulled back almost 30 seconds over the 2.4km run. Jansone, however, had done more than enough to see out a hard-won victory.
A fast swim also proved to be key in the men’s race as a small lead pack managed to pull clear early on. Thomas Greco (ALB) was the top swimmer of the day (5:59) while race winner Giacomo Giorgini (ITA) was hot on his heels going into T1. Giorgini would lead the front group in and out of T2 before rounding things off with a 7:33 run split.
Lior Hendroker (ISR) had the fastest run split (7:29) and came through from the chase group to take the silver medal. Bronze then went to Zaкhar Tsivkovskyi (UKR) who finished just 1 second back. View the full results here.
