Super Sprint Racing Takes Centre Stage in Kitzbühel

In the same week that Kitzbühel was confirmed as the host of the 2027 Europe Triathlon Championships, the iconic Austrian venue welcomes the Europe Triathlon Cup for a fast and furious Super Sprint weekend, with racing getting underway on Friday 19 June.

The format promises plenty of action, with three men's semifinals and two women's semifinals before Saturday's finals. With athletes required to qualify through the heats before returning to race again the following day, tactical racing and energy management will be just as important as outright speed.

Men's Race

Germany's Jaspar Ortfeld arrives in Austria as one of the athletes to watch. The recent winner in Olsztyn starts in the opening semifinal wearing bib number one. After claiming medals in both Olsztyn and Torremolinos this season, Ortfeld will be aiming to continue his impressive run of form.

Belgium's Erwin Vanderplancke also returns to European competition following his appearance in the World Triathlon Championship Series race in Yokohama last month. The experienced Belgian will hope that the higher level racing in Japan provides a valuable platform heading into Kitzbühel.

Home support will be focused on Thomas Windischbauer, who lines up in the first men's semifinal. The Austrian will be hoping to deliver a strong performance in front of local fans and secure a place in Saturday's final.

Great Britain's Hamish Reilly returns to Europe Triathlon Cup action for the first time since Monte Gordo in April. Reilly starts in the second semifinal with bib number 32 and brings valuable international experience to the field.

Belgium's Cis Huyghe is another athlete worth watching. The young Belgian has raced sparingly this season, with his only start coming at the World Triathlon Cup in Lanzarote, but possesses the speed to challenge for a place in the final.

One of the most intriguing names on the start list is Graham Hummel of the United States. Born in 2009, Hummel is the youngest athlete in the field and starts with bib number 44 in the second semifinal.

The third semifinal is headed by Germany's Eric Diener, who arrives in good form following a bronze medal at the Africa Triathlon Cup Yasmine Hammamet. Diener also recorded a top-10 finish at the Europe Triathlon Cup in Caorle earlier this season and will be among the favourites to progress.

Italy's Samuele Angelini starts in the same semifinal. Angelini finished just behind Diener in Caorle and will be looking to secure his own place in Saturday's final.

Women's Race

The women's competition features several athletes arriving with strong recent form.

Germany's Julia Bröcker will be eager to bounce back after recording a DNF at last weekend's Europe Triathlon Championships in Tarragona. She starts as the top seed in the opening semifinal and will be hoping for a return to form.

Poland's Matylda Wojakiewicz also raced in Tarragona and may welcome the switch back to the shorter Super Sprint format. Her season has included top-20 finishes in Rzeszów, Olsztyn and Caorle, demonstrating consistent performances across the European circuit.

Sweden's Alma Bergqvist begins her 2026 Cup campaign in Kitzbühel. The reigning Swedish National Sprint Champion will be aiming to make an immediate impact in her first international appearance of the season.

Italy's Beatrice Mallozzi arrives after a fourteenth-place finish in Tarragona, her second-best result of the year. The Italian is particularly suited to shorter formats having raced predominantly Sprint and Super Sprint distances throughout recent seasons.

Austria's hopes rest with Leonie Hauser, who makes her first start since October 2025. Hauser is the sole Austrian in the first semifinal and will be aiming to secure a place alongside compatriots Kathrin Ritter and Hanna Röser, who compete in the second semifinal.

With qualification and finals spread across two days, athletes will need to balance aggression with conservation. In a venue renowned for producing exciting racing, the Super Sprint format should once again deliver a weekend of high-intensity action in the Austrian Alps.
