Play True - why it matters to World Triathletes

On Play True Day, the global sporting community comes together with one simple message: sport should be fair, clean and built on integrity.

But while the spotlight often falls on elite athletes, the meaning of “Play True” runs just as deep, within the Age-Group triathlon community.

Because in World Triathlon Age-Group Anti-Doping, it’s not about contracts or professional incentives. It’s about something more powerful, personal standards, community and respect for the sport.

This Play True Day, we hear from Age-Group triathletes and profiles around the world, each with their own story but united by one belief, to race clean and stay true.

'Play True to me is about being honest with the sport and with myself. In triathlon there are no shortcuts. It's all about training, the efforts and showing up on race day. Racing clean just makes ever finish line feel more worth it, because you know you earned it.'
Ann Pow, Age-Group triathlete representing Malaysia.

'For me having a clean sport in triathlon means that everyone has a fair chance of winning. That means that every competition is a true demonstration of everyone's talents and who worked the hardest.'
Luciana Pun, Age-Group triathlete representing Peru.

'Playing clean isn't just about following a rule book but it's about respecting the time and hours you put into training as well as respecting the person lining up beside you on race day. It's about knowing that when you cross that finish line, your achievement is all yours to claim. So, let's play the course fair and play clean.'
Sarah Segrest, born in Vietnam, adopted and raised in the United States, Age-Group triathlete representing USA.

'The medal, it means nothing if it's not really you. It' s about finishing and knowing you've given your true self to the process and to the competition, so the result really means something because you worked for it. I prefer finishing last and knowing it was really me than finishing first and knowing it wasn’t really me. Remember we're not professionals, we do this for passion and not for money, so why would we risk everything for just an empty result. Every athlete has that moment when they can choose a shortcut or not and that moment defines you. When I cross that finish line I want to be proud, not just because of the time on the clock, but of the time I invested in my body, my mind and all the process. I want to set an example of the people around me and for myself, above everything else. Because at the end of the day, the result is temporary but the athlete you become, lasts forever.'
Felipe Amaro, Age-Group triathlete representing Mexico.

'I know how important it is that our triathletes know that they're competing against other clean athletes when they line up on the start line, so that's why I celebrate Play True Day.'
Leslie Buchanan, World Triathlon Executive Board Member.

'As athletes we dedicate our lives to pushing the limits of what is humanly possible and we do this through hard work, discipline and trust in a fair process. And that's why Play True Day is so important, it's a reminder that sport only matters when it's built on honesty, fairness and respect. From my perspective as an athlete and as the chair of the World Triathlon Athletes Committee, protecting clean sport is about protecting every athlete’s right to compete on a level playing field. It's about believing that performance comes from commitment and not from shortcuts. Play True means competing with integrity, respecting your fellow athletes and inspiring the next generation to do the same. So today and every day, let's stand together for clean sport and let's play true.'
Non Stanford MBE, Olympian | World & European Champion | Commonwealth Games Medallist | Executive Board Member | Committee Chair | High Performance Coach.

And at the highest level of the sport, we hear from some of triathlon’s biggest names on what it means to Play True.

“The importance of clean sport cannot be overstated, it creates fairness and a level playing field for all athletes. Play True is about safeguarding the integrity of sport worldwide.

When we put in so much hard work into training and competition, every athlete deserves for it to be fair. Play True is about being true to yourself, being honest and competing at your very best.

Play True, it starts with me, and it starts with you.'
Lauren Parker OAM, Paralympian and World Para Champion of Australia.

'Play True Day and clean sport mean the world to me and to my younger self who once dreamt of becoming a champion on his own merits, competing in fair and equal conditions.'
Matt Hauser, World Triathlon Champion and Olympian (Australia)

This Play True Day, let’s continue to build a community grounded in fairness, respect and integrity, on every start line, in every race, around the world.
