The International Testing Agency (ITA), leading an independent anti-doping program on behalf of World Triathlon, reports that Portuguese triathlete Pedro Afonso Pinto Gaspar has accepted a three-year period of ineligibility after testing positive for the prohibited substance Mesterolone.
The ITA, on behalf of World Triathlon, confirms that the athlete Pedro Afonso Pinto Gaspar has agreed to the consequences for his anti-doping rule violation (ADRV).
The athlete tested positive for Mesterolone after providing a sample on 29 June 2025 during an in-competition doping control conducted by the ITA under the testing and results management authority of World Triathlon at the 2025 World Triathlon Mediterranean Championships in Taranto, Italy.
Mesterolone is prohibited under the 2025 WADA Prohibited List as S1.1 Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS). It is prohibited at all times (in- and out-of-competition) and is a non-specified substance. Mesterolone is known for its potent androgenic properties by increasing testosterone levels and enhancing male sexual characteristics.
When notified of the case, the athlete was provisionally suspended with immediate effect.
The athlete did not challenge his ADRV and agreed with the consequences for his ADRV under the World Triathlon anti-doping rules as proposed by the ITA. Accordingly, the case was resolved via an acceptance of consequences.
Due to his early admission of the ADRV, the athlete was entitled to a one-year reduction of the applicable period of ineligibility as set forth in article 10.8.1 of the World Triathlon anti-doping rules.³
The 3-year period of ineligibility is from 31 July 2025 until 30 July 2028. Additionally, all the athlete’s individual competitive results from the date of sample collection (29 June 2025) to the start of the provisional suspension (31 July 2025), are disqualified, including forfeiture of medals, points and prizes.
Parties with a right of appeal, namely the World Anti-Doping Agency and the Athlete’s national anti-doping organisation, have not challenged the decision and the deadlines to do so have expired. The ITA’s decision is thus final.
The ITA or World Triathlon will not comment further on this case.
