Matthew McElroy returns to Tongyeong to defend the World Cup title

The World Cup tour continues in Asia this weekend with the renowned race on the calendar in Tongyeong South Korea. Athletes will compete for Olympic points, ranking and personal bests in a fast and furious sprint-distance showdown (750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run). The fields are stacked with talent and motivation in an all-important Olympic qualification window for Paris 2024. A stacked field of 65 Elite men will line up on Saturday in the 2023 World Triathlon Cup Tongyeong.

HELLWIG WANTS TO CONTINUE HIS MEDAL STREAK
Germany’s Tim Hellwig has had a stunning season featuring a silver medal in the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, a gold medal last weekend in Chengdu and is looking to continue his success in South Korea. Hellwig will be up against the defending champion in Tongyeong Matthew McElroy (USA), who won here in 2022 in a winning time of 01:44:49. Azerbaijan’s Rostislav Pevtsov is another medal contender this weekend after a dominant performance last week in China to earn the bronze.

MISLAWCHUK EYEING PODIUM SUCCESS
Canada’s Tyler Mislawchuk brings a wealth of experience and talent to the men’s field in Tongyeong. Mislawchuk came 9th in the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Pontevedra, showing what a world class act the Canadian athlete is. Mislawchuk will start his Asian tour in Tongyeong this weekend and will continue to race again next weekend in Miyazaki, Japan.

GERMAN BATTLE WITH SCHOMBURG AND PRIESTER
Jonas Schomburg was finally awarded the World Cup medal he had been searching many years for, in the 2023 World Triathlon Cup Karlovy Vary. Schomburg isn’t afraid to ride off the front or attack and ride solo and will likely be a major contender in setting up Saturday’s men’s race. Germany’s Lasse Nygaard Priester will be looking for redemption after not having the race he was after last weekend in Chengdu. Priester lost his luggage en route to China therefore his race was disrupted but this weekend presents another opportunity to be in contention for a World Cup medal and valuable Olympic points. Valentin Wernz of Germany will join the contingent and also be one to watch, after claiming bronze in 2023 World Triathlon Cup Yeongdo.

COPELAND, BIRTWHISTLE AND RIDDLE LOOK TO POWER THE TRAIN
Dynamo duo Brandon Copeland and Jake Birtwhistle are strong contenders on the World Triathlon Championship Series scene and will power a strong contingent of Australia’s racing in Tongyeong. The likes of young gun Oscar Dart and Commonwealth Games representative Luke Willian will be ones to watch. 2023 Africa Champion Jamie Riddle (RSA) will be looking to show his powerful and aggressive racing style and won’t be shy of attacking off the front and making an impact on the race early on.

TEAM WORLD TRIATHLON
Uzbekistan’s Aleksandr Kurishov and Morocco’s Badr Siwane join the World Cup in Tongyeong, as members of Team World Triathlon. Both men are motivated by Olympic points and selection for Paris 2024 and will be looking for strong outcomes and World Cup success this weekend.

7 athletes will be representing Korea on the men’s start list in Tongyeong.
