On March 9, 2004 the 3rd World Conference on Women and Sport took place in Marrakech, Morocco. The ITU representative was Marisol Casado; President of ETU, ITU Executive Board member and Executive Director of the Spanish Triathlon Federation. More than 600 delegates from 137 countries were in attendance, including IOC President Jacques Rogge.
The Conference made several recommendations, the first of which reaffirmed the
targets established in 1996 for the International Olympic Committee, International
Sports Federations and National Olympic Committees to have at least 20% women
on their executive boardsand legislative bodies by 2005.
The final conference resolution expressed a statement of regret at “the slow pace in implementing fully the action plan formulated by inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations and the lack of concrete, visible and legible actions at the grass root level.” Around the Rings reported that, with only one woman, Gunilla Lindberg of Sweden - among the 14 members of the Executive Board, the IOC needs to add at least two more by 2005 to comply with its own stated goals.
