On Saturday April 22, Marco Antônio La Porta was appointed as the new president of the Brazilian National Federation (CBTri), with a total of 15 of the 23 possible votes, within the electoral process for the new board of the institution, held in Vila Velha, CBTri’s current headquarters.
The original from Rio de Janeiro, who resides in Brasilia, Marco La Porta will have four years in office, replacing the former president Carlos Alberto Machado Fróes who presided the entity since 1999. His CEO will be the former athlete Virgílio de Castilho, silver medal in the Pan American Games of 2003.
Making Brazilian triathlon as a whole is the very short term goal of the new CBTri president, after an election marked by much emotion. “I am convinced that we must all get together for the growth of the sport. I want to hear each of the state federations, with great affection. I know that every question has made us grow and I know my responsibility”. “No one develops alone, especially in sports. I feel a huge responsibility ahead, but I am fully prepared for that” - “I want to get Brazilian triathlon together and I know that this is also everyone’s wish, so, right now, it is my top priority.”
About the election: “I want to thank all the representatives of the federations, all of them. And the representative of the athletes, Diogo Sclebin. I am happy and excited. I have a passion for Triathlon and I want to collaborate even more for its growth. That’s what really moves me”.
The new president of CBTri, Marco Antônio La Porta joined CBTri in 2004 as course director, and in 2009 he became the organization’s technical director - a role he held until the present day.
Born on May 22 1967, Marco La Porta graduated in Physical Education from the Army School of Physical Education, being retired Colonel of the Army and living in Brasilia, married and with a son.
Instructor of the Army School of Physical Education for ten years, taught classes in Physiology, Sports Training and Training Plan. In 2000 he joined the triathlon world, taking over the Army Triathlon Team, and in 2001 he achieved his first title as a triathlon coach conquering the 1st Brazilian Triathlon Championship of the Armed Forces, classifying the team for the Military Worlds - when Brazil participated for the first time in 2002.
He lectured triathlon throughout PATCO and ITU, and in 2003 he was appointed Head of Coaching Courses of CBTri. He continued to be coach of the Army triathlon team and Armed Forces, winning all four Brazilian Triathlon Military Championships and has led the Brazilian team in all the world championships since 2002 and in the European Championships of 2009 and 2010, being champion in the latter two .
In 2007 he was Technical Coordinator of the Triathlon at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro and won his first title of Brazilian Triathlon Champion with Women’s Elite.
He served as Triathlon Team Leader at the South American Beach Games in Punta Del Este (2009) and South American Games in Medellin (2010). He was also Head of the Triathlon Team at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics. Marco La Porta also took Sports Management Courses from the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB).
