Beijing Olympian Courtney Atkinson confirmed his status as a master tactician by successfully defending his Australian Olympic Distance Triathlon title this past weekend at the 2009 Perth ITU Triathlon Oceania Cup and Australian national championships.
Following what was, by his lofty standards, a poor swim, Atkinson lead a pack of 16 off the bike before running away from Gareth Halverson at the halfway stage of the 10km run to win in a time of 1hr 46min 17secs. Halverson finished almost a full minute adrift, while up-and-comer James Seear snared bronze and in doing so earned himself automatic selection in the under23 field for the ITU Triathlon World Championships on the Gold Coast in September.
I had a really poor swim because the young blokes were all hyped up and sprinted out for the first 200 metres and I really battled to get through the field from there, Atkinson said.
Gareth went with me on the run and although were actually rooming together over here this weekend I really dont know that much about his racing style and youre never too sure how things will go because someone always jumps up and has a good day. But at the 5km mark it started to warm up and I suppose I was able to hold my pace and he dropped off a bit. That was the goal to run out reasonably hard and then stick to a pace that I could hold evenly.
Halverson, 24, was happy with his return to form: I had a few injuries and then it was probably more of a mental challenge to turn things around, but that was a good race for me and gives me a solid platform going into what will hopefully be a strong season.
In the womens race, former world number one, Annabel Luxford continued her triumphant return from injury, dominating the field to add this title to the national sprint crown she secured in Hobart last month. Absent were the Olympic trio of Snowsill, Moffatt and Densham, and world number two, Felicity Abram.
Luxford was in complete control after stepping off the bike among a leading bunch of four riders, but set the tone immediately in the run leg to move away and win easily in a time of 1hr 59min 38secs. Japans Sakimoto Tomoko showed plenty of grit to claim second, while local hope Felicity Sheedy-Ryan thrilled the Perth crowd to pull back two places in the run home to snare third place.
Luxford only gave herself a pass mark. I need to sharpen up a bit my transitions were pretty rusty and I need to show a bit more explosiveness in those initial stages on each leg, said the 26-year-old. But that was my first Olympic Distance race for more than a year and I felt far more comfortable on the run today than what I did in Hobart, so all the signs are good.
Both Atkinson and Luxford will now head to the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup in a fortnight for the opener of the international racing season.

El Olmpico en Beijing Courtney Atkinson confirm su maestra tctica tras defender con xito su ttulo de Campen Australiano de Triatln Distancia Olmpica este fin de semana, en la Copa de Oceana de Triatln de Perth y campeonato australiano nacional.
Siguiendo con su tradicional mala natacin, Atkinson se recuper y lider a un grupo de 16 a la salida de la bicicleta, antes de escaparse de Gareth Halverson en el punto medio de los 10 km de la carrera a pie para ganar con un tiempo de 1hr 46min y 17seg. Halverson termin con casi un minuto de desventaja, mientras que la promesa James Seear se hizo con el bronce y con la seleccin automtica para los Campeonatos del Mundo de Triatln ITU de Gold Coast en categora Sub 23 que se celebrarn en Septiembre.
Tuve realmente una mala natacin porque los jvenes estaban eufricos y esprintaron en los primeros 200 metros y desde ah verdaderamente luche por escaparme, dijo Atkinson.
Gareth vino conmigo en la carrera a pie y aunque nos hemos alojado juntos aqu este fin de semana, realmente no saba mucho sobre su estilo de carrera y nunca estas del todo seguro de cmo sucedern las cosas porque alguien siempre puede lanzar un ataque y tener un buen da. Pero en la seal de 5km empec a entrar en calor y me di cuenta que era capaz de poner mi ritmo y l se desvaneci un poco. Ese era el objetivo, agotarle bastante y luego mantener un ritmo constante.
Halverson de 24 aos estaba contento con su regreso: Tuve algunas lesiones y fue ms un reto mental para poder cambiar las cosas, pero ha sido una buena carrera para m y me sirve como base de la que ser una intensa temporada.
En la carrera femenina, la ex nmero uno mundial, Annabel Luxforrd continu con regreso triunfal tras su lesin, dominando la categora para aadir este ttulo a la corona nacional en distancia sprint que consigui el pasado mes en Hobart. Estuvieron ausentes el tro Olmpico de Snowsill, Moffatt y Densham y la nmero dos del mundo, Felicity Abram.
Luxford mantuvo el control despus de que el grupo lder de cuatro corredoras intensificasen el ritmo, pero fue ella quien marc las pautas en el segmento de carrera a pie para situarse en cabeza y ganar con facilidad en un tiempo de 1hr 59min y 38 seg. La japonesa Sakimoto Tomoko demostr muchas agallas para alcanzar la segunda posicin, mientras que la esperanza local Felicity Sheedy-Ryan hizo vibrar al pblico de Perth tras remontar dos puestos en la carrera a pie y lograr el tercer lugar.
Luxford slo se dio un aprobado. Tengo que afinar un poco, se me noto falta de prctica en las transiciones y necesito mostrar un poco ms de explosividad en la fase inicial de cada segmento, dijo la triatleta de 26 aos. Pero ha sido mi primera carrera en Distancia Olmpica en ms de un ao y me he sentido mucho ms cmoda en la carrera de hoy que en la de Hobart, por lo que todas las seales son buenas.
Tanto Atkinson como Luxford se dirigirn a la Copa del Mundo de Triatln ITU de Mooloolaba en quince das para comenzar la temporada internacional.
