Hyponatremia, a low concentration of sodium in the blood, may occur in athletes participating in ultra-endurance sports. Prolonged physical activity and excessive sweat production increases the risk of an athlete having too little sodium in their blood stream during training and competition. Because sodium is lost in sweat, it is important for athletes who exercise at high intensity to get adequate sodium before, during and after exercise, especially as they continue to drink water.
