On a classic Para Series course in perfect conditions and races stacked with Paralympic champions, it was two new faces that showed the way to LA as Bence Mocsari (PTS5) and McClain Hermes (USA) won their first golds on the circuit on Saturday morning at WTPS Yokohama.
And it was the PTS5 men that got the racing underway, Mocsari, Martin Schulz (GER) and Jack Howell (AUS) locked into battle for the majority of the run before the Hungarian was able to dig in, this time showing no sign of the cramps that have hampered him in the past, Howell taking the silver from his German rival.
In the visually impaired PTVI races, Maggie Sandles (AUS) may have set the fastest pace in the water and was lightning in transition, but she couldnt close the gap on McClain Hermes who powered the bike and held firm on the run, beating the Australian by three minutes, Taylor Talbot (USA) third. Lazar Filipovic (SRB) backed up his gold in Samarkand with another good win, this time over Sam Harding of Australia, Maxime Gayet (FRA) third.
Nobody could hold a candle to World and Paralympic Champion Grace Norman (USA) in the PTS5 women's race, Erica da Rodrigues (BRA) holding off Australia's young talent Grace Brimelow for silver.
In the men's PTS4 race, another storied athlete took the tape, Alexis Hanquinquant high-kicking his way over the line and clearly loving his eighth Yokohama gold just as much as he did his first. French talent Antoîne Lamarche Poulain took the silver, Japan's Hideki Uda bronze.
Camille Seneclauze (FRA) was able to run her way to the women's PTS4 gold after chasing down Britain's Hannah Moore, Ingrid de Oude (NED) third, while a powerful Anna Plotnikova (AIN) bike assured her the PTS3 gold ahead of Serena Banzato (ITA) and Atalia Nevo (ISR).
It was the bike that did the damage for Henry Urand (GBR) as he took home a first men's PTS3 title in Yokohama, Cedric Denuziere with silver, Viktor Chebotarev (AIN) in third. The men's PTS2 was eventually won by USA's Mark Barr after Wim de Paepe (BEL) had looked in control out of T2, Mohamed Lahna home in third. The women's PTS2 saw Hailey Danz (USA) storm to her third straight Yokohama gold, Anu Francis (AUS) three minutes back in second, Asumi Yasuda (JPN) with bronze.
