Home hero Marik strikes gold as Bán dominates in Tabor

Home favourite Jakub Marik claimed gold in Tabor this weekend, while Hungary's Petra Bán produced a dominant performance to take victory in the Junior Women's race.

Jan Kovář led the men's race out of the water, with the Czech athlete clocking a 9:45 swim, 10 seconds quicker than the rest of the field. That gave him the advantage through T1, but he was soon joined by fellow Czech Ondrej Plic as the pair formed the lead group, working together through the bike leg and into T2.

It was on the run that Marik made his move. The Czech surged to the front of the race, with Italy's Alessandro Villa and Jacopo Mapelli battling to stay in contention. Behind them, Hungary's Levente Szabó produced the fastest 5km split of the day in 16:07 and launched a late charge, but the gap proved too large to close. Marik crossed the line in 58:31, securing victory by nine seconds over Szabó.

Szabó also had little room for error in the closing stages, with Villa pushing him all the way to the finish. Just one second separated silver and bronze as the Italian completed the podium.

After finishing outside the top 20 in his previous two races, Marik claimed his first podium, and first victory, of the season, making the triumph even sweeter in front of a home crowd.

For Szabó, the silver medal marks the first European podium of his career. With several more opportunities to race this season, the Hungarian will be hoping it is the first of many.

Villa also celebrated a career milestone, claiming the first international junior podium of his career. Born in 2009, the Italian still has several years remaining at junior level and continues to show impressive development.

Junior Women

In the Junior Women's race, Hungary added two more medals to its tally as Petra Bán delivered one of the most commanding performances of the weekend, recording the fastest swim, bike and run splits.

Bán immediately took control of the race with a swim that was an incredible one minute and 30 seconds faster than her nearest rival. A swift transition saw her extend that advantage onto the bike, where she continued to build her lead.

Only fellow Hungarian Zóra Filep could match Bán's pace on two wheels, with both athletes recording identical 34:27 bike splits. However, the damage had already been done in the swim. Bán then sealed victory with a blistering 18:57 run—the only athlete to break 19 minutes and 48 seconds quicker than anyone else in the field.

The 2009-born Hungarian crossed the finish line 1:14 ahead of Filep, while Austria's Verena Zehentmayr claimed bronze, finishing 2:43 behind the winner.

The victory is Bán's first medal of the season and her first European junior gold. After racing in Tiszaújváros and Carole earlier this year, including a promising 13th-place finish on home soil, the Hungarian has taken another significant step forward.

For Filep, silver represents the first European Cup podium of her career. While she is still searching for her maiden international victory, the result provides plenty of confidence heading into the remainder of the season.

Zehentmayr also celebrated a breakthrough performance. In just her seventh junior international start, the Austrian claimed her first Junior European Cup medal, a huge improvement on her 20th-place finish in Wels only a few weeks ago.
