French dominace in Monte Gordo debut

French Domination Seals Podium Sweep

Three French athletes swept the podium in the debut sprint race at Monte Gordo, Portugal, underlining the depth and strength of the French federation.

The tricolour flag flew high on Saturday as the trio delivered a dominant performance, though the race itself was far from straightforward. Hungary’s Zalán Hóbor controlled proceedings for much of the contest, leading through the bike and into the second transition.

The decisive move came on the run, where Louis Vitiello produced a standout 14:36 over 5km to surge to the front and secure gold in the men’s race. His late charge proved too strong, reshaping the podium in the closing stages and completing a clean sweep for France. He was joined by Milan Lariviere in second and Yanis Seguin in third.

Szalai Shines To Claim Monte Gordo Glory

In the women’s elite race, it was Hungary’s Fanni Szalai who claimed top honours with a composed and consistent performance. She exited the water first and maintained a strong position throughout the bike leg to stay firmly in contention.

The race was decided on the run, where Szalai’s 16:46 — the third fastest of the day — proved decisive. Italy’s Carlotta Missaglia was unable to match the pace, clocking 17:11 to take silver.

At just 18 years old, Szalai continues to impress, further strengthening Hungary’s programme and emerging as an inspiration for younger triathletes. This victory marks her 13th win from 26 starts, highlighting her remarkable consistency as she looks ahead to the rest of the season.

Great Britain’s Eve Whitaker rounded out the podium, securing her fourth career podium and her first in a Europe Triathlon Cup race.
