Sprint Championships Preview
Elbląg hosts the 2026 Europe Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships, returning to the international calendar after successfully staging the Europe Triathlon Club Championships last year.
The action begins on Friday with the Elite, U23 and Junior Sprint Championships before the Mixed Relay titles are decided on Saturday.
Elite Men
The men's elite race features a number of athletes capable of reaching the podium, including last year's U23 European champion and overall bronze medallist Sebastian Wernersen. The Norwegian starts with bib number two and will be aiming to go even better than his breakthrough performance in Melilla.
Starting immediately behind him on bib three is Switzerland's Simon Westermann, who finished fourth overall in Spain last year. Since then, Westermann has continued to gain experience at the highest level with WTCS appearances in Hamburg and Quiberon.
Home hopes rest with Maciej Bruzdziak, who wears bib four in front of the Polish crowd. It has already been a busy season for Bruzdziak, with starts in Hamburg, Tarragona, Alghero and Samarkand providing valuable experience heading into the championships.
Spain's Sergio Baxter Cabrera arrives with recent sprint-distance form after competing in London last weekend, where he finished just outside the top 30.
Germany's Benedikt Bettin comes into Elbląg in excellent form. He claimed silver in Tata two weeks ago after winning gold at the Asia Triathlon Cup in Tam Chúc earlier this season. A proven sprint specialist, Bettin will be looking to carry that momentum into the European Championships.
Hungary's Gergő Dobi also heads to Poland with confidence after taking bronze in Tata and will be hoping that recent podium finish can translate into another strong performance this weekend.
U23 Men
The U23 race is packed with talent, and there is every chance that the next European champion will emerge from this impressive field.
Portugal's João Nuno Batista has already demonstrated his class in the WTCS this season, finishing seventh in Alghero after opening the year with silver in Quarteira. Although he did not compete in last year's championships, recent races in Hamburg and London have left him well prepared for the demands of sprint racing.
Spain's Michael Gar, silver medallist at the recent European Championships in Tarragona, will look to add another continental medal to his collection. He has also impressed on the WTCS circuit with top-20 finishes in both London and Samarkand.
France's Pablo Isotton has enjoyed a consistent campaign, taking silver in Carole before following it up with top-10 finishes in Tarragona and Tiszaújváros.
Germany's Jaspar Ortfeld has already stood on the podium twice this season, winning gold in Olsztyn after claiming bronze in Torremolinos. Returning to Poland will bring back good memories as he looks to repeat his earlier success.
Spain's Andrés Prieto Villar earned bronze in Holten at the beginning of July and has shown throughout the season that the sprint distance suits his strengths.
France's Thomas Hansmaennel has not raced since Tarragona in June, but a top-30 finish at last year's championships should provide confidence ahead of this weekend.
One of the youngest athletes in the field is France's Milan Lariviere. The 2006-born athlete arrives fresh from victory in Holten and has already added silver in Monte Gordo despite contesting only three Europe Triathlon Cup races this season. Age is unlikely to prevent him from challenging the more experienced competitors.
Estonia's Robin Randoja, another 2006-born athlete, claimed bronze at last month's Baltic Championships and will be hoping to prove that youth is no barrier to success.
Elite Women
The elite women's race is led by Poland's Roksana Słupek, who returns to race in front of a home crowd after a long recovery from the crash she suffered in Hamburg last year.
Starting with bib number one, Słupek narrowly missed the podium at the European Championships in Tarragona before producing encouraging performances in Hamburg and London. She also claimed a medal in Carole earlier this season and will have plenty of home support behind her.
Germany's Selina Klamt has collected bronze medals in both Holten and Tata this year. Although she is still searching for her first victory of 2026, her sprint-distance pedigree makes her a genuine medal contender.
With last year's top three absent, a new podium is guaranteed in Elbląg.
Italy's Ilaria Zane and Carlotta Missaglia line up alongside one another. Missaglia arrives after finishing 25th in London last weekend, while Zane most recently competed in the World Triathlon Cup in Edmonton. Both have been racing consistently at international level throughout the season.
Switzerland's Nora Gmür already knows what it takes to win in Poland after taking gold in Olsztyn earlier this year. Since then she has raced only in the Mixed Relay in Hamburg and at the European Championships in Tarragona, so race sharpness could be a factor. Nevertheless, her fourth-place finish in Carole demonstrated her sprint-distance strength.
Another home favourite is Zuzanna Sudak, who has produced an impressively consistent run of form with top-10 finishes in each of her last three Europe Triathlon Cup appearances.
Ukraine's Sofiya Pryyma enjoyed a busy week in Banyoles, competing in both the Cross Triathlon and Cross Duathlon, where she secured bronze in the latter. She has also been a regular on the Asia Triathlon Cup circuit, recording three consecutive top-10 finishes.
Portugal's Inês Rico arrives as the reigning Portuguese National Sprint Champion. However, she has not raced in European competition since Monte Gordo in April, making race rhythm one of the key questions heading into the weekend.
U23 Women
Germany's Julia Bröcker leads the U23 women's field after winning gold in Kitzbühel earlier this season.
Spain's Ana Carballo Gómez has also enjoyed a strong campaign, taking bronze in the Olsztyn Europe Triathlon Cup and helping Spain to Mixed Relay bronze in Quiberon.
Italy's Paola Sacchi has already celebrated success in both individual and relay racing this season, claiming bronze at the World Triathlon Cup in Edmonton before helping Italy to Mixed Relay gold the following day.
Junior World Champion Léa Houart may be one of the youngest athletes in the field, but the Frenchwoman has already shown she can compete with the best, narrowly missing the podium in Holten.
Compatriot Ambre Grasset has not raced since May but opened her season with consecutive victories in Carole and Torremolinos. She now returns looking to complete a hat-trick of wins.
Great Britain's Eve Whitaker also returns after a lengthy break from European competition. Her last continental appearance brought bronze in Monte Gordo, and she will be aiming to make an immediate impact in Elbląg.
Poland's Matylda Wojakiewicz claimed silver in Kitzbühel and will be hoping home support can inspire another podium performance. She is joined by fellow Poles Aleksandra Ferchmin and Józefina Młynarska, giving the home crowd plenty of athletes to cheer throughout the U23 race.
Junior Women
Switzerland's Anouk Danna has enjoyed an outstanding season, winning elite gold in Wels before adding victory at the Junior Cup in Olsztyn. She also gained valuable experience representing Switzerland in the Mixed Relay at WTCS Hamburg and arrives in Elbląg as one of the favourites.
Romania's Tunde Georgiana Crisan comes into the championships full of confidence after claiming silver at the most recent Junior Cup in Izvorani. She also helped Romania to Mixed Relay gold on home soil and will be aiming to carry that momentum into Poland.
Latvia's Beate Jansone has consistently challenged at the front this season, producing strong performances in Holten and Carole before securing victory at the Baltic Championships.
Germany's Linda Krombach has also gained valuable experience at elite level, representing her country in Mixed Relay events in both Hamburg and Quiberon.
France's Anouk Rigaud has raced only once in 2026, but made it count with victory in Carole back in May. She now returns to international competition looking to continue that winning form.
Slovenia's Anja Bezlaj arrives after claiming bronze at the U23 Aquathlon in Banyoles, adding to top-10 finishes in both Wels and Olsztyn earlier this season.
Switzerland's Noemi Badrutt has been one of the most consistent athletes on the Junior Cup circuit, recording three consecutive top-10 finishes, including fourth place in Wels.
Five athletes born in 2010 line up in Elbląg, underlining the depth of emerging talent in the field. Crisan is joined by Kimey Casanova, Kitty Scott, who finished third in Quarteira, and Evamaria Albert, who returns to racing after last competing in Carole in May.
Sweden's Hanna Månsson has also enjoyed an impressive campaign, winning the Swedish National Sprint Championship while adding bronze medals in both Olsztyn and Tiszaújváros. She will be another athlete to watch in the battle for the podium.
Junior Men
The junior men's race promises to be equally competitive, with several recent Junior Cup medallists set to battle for the European title.
Austria's Jelle Kaindl has balanced appearances across both Junior and Elite Cup events this season. He claimed his first international medal with bronze in Rzeszów before stepping up to race the World Triathlon Cup in Edmonton, experience that could prove invaluable this weekend.
Romania's Alexandru-Rareș Popa helped his nation secure Mixed Relay gold in Izvorani and starts on bib number two. He will be hoping that confidence translates into an individual podium challenge.
France's Thibault Rivier already knows what it takes to win in Poland after taking gold in the Junior Cup in Olsztyn. Earlier in the season he opened his medal tally with bronze in Quarteira.
Hungary's Zsombor Holba arrives after claiming silver on home roads in Tiszaújváros, where compatriot András Szűcs secured his first international victory with an impressive gold-medal performance.
Luxembourg's Sebastian Ziekman heads to Elbląg after earning silver in Wels, another confidence-boosting result in a highly competitive field.
The home nation has three athletes on the start list. Jan Chmielewski narrowly missed the podium in Olsztyn before recording a strong seventh-place finish in the Banyoles Duathlon. Kacper Serwiński, who starts on bib 15, claimed silver in Rzeszów ahead of his compatriot, while Adam Dąbrowski completes the Polish line-up.
Only two athletes born in 2010 feature in the junior men's field. Switzerland's Albert Håkansson, wearing bib 47, has already shown his potential with a sixth-place finish in Wels.
Portugal's Artur Gaspar starts from bib 49 as part of a four-strong Portuguese squad. Although he has not raced since Torremolinos in April, the young Portuguese athlete will be hoping to make an immediate impact on his return to competition.
