CPD: Coaching Female Triathletes Through Menopause

The recent World Triathlon Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Course on coaching female triathletes through menopause brought together 105 participants from 51 countries, creating a global professional learning experience. The course provided a multi-dimensional approach to supporting female athletes through midlife transitions, blending scientific expertise, elite athletic experience, and applied coaching strategies.

Course Overview

The course was structured into four key sessions, each addressing critical aspects of female physiology, performance, and well-being during menopause:

Session 1 – Female Physiology & Menopause
Keynote Speakers & Experts: Kristina Skroče & Irina Zelenkova
This roundtable explored the unique aspects of female physiology across life stages. The session focused on medical and health considerations during menopause, addressing both performance optimisation and long-term wellbeing.

Session 2 – Training, Strength & Nutrition
Keynote Speakers & Experts: Esther Morencos & Nicholas Willsmer
Participants examined training adaptations, strength development, recovery, and nutrition strategies for menopausal athletes. Emphasis was placed on translating research and elite sport experience into actionable coaching strategies, including managing hormonal changes, muscle function, energy availability, and recovery protocols.

Session 3 – Mental Health & Athlete-Centred Coaching
Keynote Speakers & Experts: Holly Benner & Fenella Ng
This session highlighted the role of mindset, identity, and psychological safety in performance and well-being. Coaches explored resilience during life transitions, the emotional landscape of menopause, and strategies to foster trust, empowerment, and compassionate coaching environments.

Session 4 – Clinical Insight & Long-Term Athlete Health
Keynote Speakers & Experts:  Katie Treston-Torney
The final session provided a comprehensive clinical perspective, covering RED-S, musculoskeletal health, postpartum and midlife transitions, injury prevention, and sustainable performance development. Integrating clinical practice, research, and international competition experience, this session addressed balancing ambition with long-term athlete health.

Impact and Outcomes

The course successfully combined science, applied coaching strategies, and global collaboration. Participants gained practical knowledge and confidence to support female athletes through menopause, promoting performance, health, and longevity in sport.
