With the goal set on the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, World Triathlon proudly announces that applications for the 2023 Team World Triathlon are now open and we are ready to welcome new members of the team.
“The year of 2023 is the most important and only full year in the Olympic Qualification period for Paris 2024. Athletes still have a chance to increase their points for the first qualification year until 26 May, and for this season the Team World Triathlon programme will focus on the second qualification year, offering support for five World Cup events in 2023”, explained Zita Csovelyak, World Triathlon Head of Development. “Two team members, Jawad Abdelmoula (MAR) and Diego Moya (CHI), are currently holding an Olympic Qualification quota place on the current Olympic Ranking and we hope more athletes will be in similar status either through the OQ ranking, with the new flag spots or the universality place pathway. This year World Triathlon Development wants to increase the number of athletes joining the team based on their results and improvements in 2022. Besides Huatulco, Valencia, Chengdu and Brasilia one more World Cup race will be added to the programme by the end of March,” she said.
This elite athlete development program aiming to support Olympic Qualification has been running since 2006, and on the previous editions it has given support to some legends of our sport like Olympic Champion from Bernuda Flora Duffy or London Olympics silver medallist Lisa Norden (SWE). Over these years thirty athletes have been members of the Team World Triathlon (formerly Team ITU) qualified for one or more Olympic Games. In Tokyo 2020, the Team was compromised by Kaidi Kivioja (EST), Mehdi Essadiq (MAR), Romina Biagioli (ARG), Diego Moya (CHI), Basmla Elsalamoney (EGY) and Mohamad Maso (SYR).
The primary objective of this project is to provide support, resources, and expertise to athletes from emerging/developing National Federations (NF Group* 2, 3B, 3A) with the potential to compete at the World Triathlon Cup level and qualify for the Paris Olympic Games. World Triathlon Development is also looking after young talents facilitating their athlete career from junior to elite and aiming at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games and beyond.
The project also aiming to increase the number of coaches from emerging/developing National Federations (NF Group* 2, 3B, 3A) gaining experience in the preparation and support of athletes competing at a World Cup level. (*Note: for NF Groups please visit National Federation Survey)
This year, four World Cup events have been named as the Team World Triathlon events in 2023.The selected World Cups will be Huatulco (México), on 17 June; Valencia (Spain), on 2 September; Chengdu (China) on 14 October and Brasilia (Brasil) on 15 October. A last World Cup will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
At each of these events, coaching, physiotherapy, and bike mechanic support will be on hand for the athletes selected. The group will be accommodated as a ‘team’ and supported as such pre, during and post-event.
Gender equality and geographic distribution will be considered in the selection for each project. Additional to the application process, World Triathlon Development may invite athletes for each project in agreement with their respective National Federation.
To maximise female participation and support, World Triathlon Development may invite potential female athletes fighting for the “New Flag” position of their respective continent in the Olympic Qualification on the way to Paris. For this reason, World Triathlon Development/Selection Panel may consider female athletes with an exception.
In order to apply, athletes must have been born in 1994 or later, and must be in the top 250 of the World Triathlon Ranking and have at least two results finishing in the first 66% from Continental Cup events in the past 12 months.
All athletes must be registered and in good standing with their National Federations and have shown the ability to race at a high level. The athletes nominated should be committed to competing in the long term and have the Olympic Games as an ultimate objective.
While there will be a maximum of ten slots available at each event, athletes will be selected at the discretion of World Triathlon Development and in some cases, not all the slots or more slots will be filled. Athletes from the continent where the WC is taking place are favoured, as well as Athletes connected with the Continental Development Projects too.
