The 2010 ITU Triathlon World Championships were held the past weekend in cool conditions. In the Olympic-distance event on Sunday, South African Andrea Steyn had the best overall time of the day, finishing in 1:55:43, winning in the 25-29 group. Gillian Curr came in at twelve. Susan Sloan and Lisa-Marie Bright, also form South Africa placed in the top 25, while Sonja Boyd and Alison Teresa Critchley placed 41st and 73rd respectively. In the men’s 25-29 category, South Africa placed three athletes in the top seven. Bjorn Ludick (4th), Travis Johnston (6th) and Gian-Nicola De Dominicis placed 7th.
Three South African athletes placed in the top 40 of the 20-24 age groupers. Tayla Glover came in seventh place, with Lynette van der Merwe and Nelmare Loubser placing 22nd and 38th, respectively. In the same age group, Ruan Meyer and Vukile Makeleni placed in the top 55.
The Egyptian federation showed that they too show promise as a triathlon nation, with Ahmed Zaher finishing sixth in the men’s 45-49 group. Piers Pirrow from SA finished in the top ten, of the same group.
