2025 World Duathlon title up for grabs in an exciting opener of Pontevedra Multisport Championships

The countdown is on as Pontevedra gears up to host the very first world title race of the 2025 World Triathlon Multisport Championships: the Duathlon World Championships. Kicking off what promises to be an exhilarating week of competition, this opening event will see the world’s best duathletes battling it out across the streets of Pontevedra for a 5km initial run, followed by a 30km bike and a final 5km run.  With so much at stake, the race is set to ignite the city with energy, passion, and world-class endurance as athletes from around the globe chase their dreams of glory.

The men's race features a stellar start list, headlined by last year's reigning world champion, Javier Martin Morales (ESP). The Spaniard has been preparing for this race training in a high altitude center in Madrid, and is willing to prove that his stellar performance last year in Townsville was not a one-day-wonder.

Fans will also watch closely as well-known duathlon stalwarts battle for victory. Veteran Benjamin Choquert (FRA), who previously claimed the world title in Pontevedra in 2019, is determined to reclaim the crown after finishing second three years in a row, including last year—an enduring pursuit of revenge. Arnaud Dely (BEL) and rising French stars Emile Blondel and Krilan LeBihan will also be vying for the podium, bringing their speed and experience to this rugged course.

Local fans will cheer for Antonio Serrat Seoane (ESP), a familiar face on the World Triathlon circuit, known for his speed on the run. Hailing from Pontevedra, Serrat’s home-field advantage, coupled with his bike power, makes him a notable contender to watch. Similarly, Spaniard Genis Grau is expected to impress with his fast-paced running style, energizing the streets of Pontevedra.

On the women’s side, the defending champion Marion Legrand (FRA), wearing bib number 1, will be seeking to defend her title in front of a passionate crowd. She faces a strong field that includes fierce competitors such as Mexican athlete Anahi Alvarez Corral, a former track and field athlete that has some of the fastest legs of the circuit. Spanish runner Maria Varo Zuribi, and Italian Federica Frigerio— are all known for their speed and racing savvy.

The Age-Groupers, Junior, U23 and Para duathletes will also be fighting for World titles on Saturday in Pontevedra. An event that  will serve as a perfect launchpad for what is set to be an action-packed 10 days of multisport competition. With elite athletes from around the world converging in Pontevedra, spectators can expect intense battles, impressive performances, and a celebratory atmosphere that highlights the spirit of sport and community.

The Elite Duathlon World Championships will be live streamed on TriathlonLIVE. You can watch the women's race on Saturday at 15.45 CET, followed by the men's race at 18.30 CET. Check HERE the start lists.
