Delegates from 95 National Federations gathered in Sanxenxo, Pontevedra, for the 39th World Triathlon Congress. Members admitted Yemen to the triathlon family and approved the 2027 budget and changes to the Constitution. They also looked ahead to a new era for the sport with the launch of the Triathlon World Tour.
World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany opened the Congress. José Hidalgo, President of the Spanish Triathlon Federation, welcomed delegates, as did representatives from Sanxenxo and the Spanish Ministry of Sport. IOC President Kirsty Coventry addressed Congress with a virtual welcome message.
Looking ahead to LA28 and beyond
IOC Sports Director Pierre Ducrey presented the IOC's Fit for the Future agenda and its work on female participation in sport. Christine Bosco, LA28 Sport Manager, then unveiled the courses for the Triathlon and Para triathlon events at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Delegates also heard from the hosts of two major events in 2027. Oliver Schiek, Secretary General of the German Triathlon Union, presented the Hamburg 2027 Championship Finals, and the organising team of Edmonton 2027 presented the Multisport World Championships.
Dr Morten Schmidt, Global Director of Programmes and Grants at the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, gave a presentation on growing women participation in sport, building on the Congress's focus on female participation.
A new global circuit for 2027
Presentations at the World Triathlon Congress in Pontevedra this week revealed more details on the upcoming Triathlon World Tour, including 30 more T50 and T100 races below the Championship top tier.
"If we want triathlon to grow, we have to invest in making our sport more commercial. The Triathlon World Tour shows what that looks like: a partnership that brings new revenue to World Triathlon and more prize money and exposure for our athletes, while World Triathlon keeps the governance of the sport. The same thinking guides our work with our new multisport circuits in winter triathlon and duathlon. Every commercial step we take is an investment in our National Federations, in developing our sport and, above all, in our athletes, who are the driving force of everything we do," said World Triathlon President, Antonio F. Arimany.

Membership, elections and governance
Congress admitted Yemen as a full member of World Triathlon and approved the Association of Commonwealth Triathlon as an Associate Member. Delegates also voted to expel Chad and Afghanistan from membership.
In committee elections, Lyndell Murray (AUS) was elected to the Technical Committee, while Neil Andrew McLeod (ITA) and Sabina Souiounov (FRA) were elected to the Legal and Constitutional Committee.
Congress approved amendments to the World Triathlon Constitution, following the independent experts report and recommendation done by them. Congress also approved the 2025 financial statements, audited by PWC, that you can find at this link. The President recognised the work done by the Audit, Risk and Integrity Committee, and thanked the immense work done by the Legal and Constitution Committee.
