Wollongong gearing up for 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals

With less than six months to race day, the City of Wollongong is already buzzing with excitement, as it prepares to host the prestigious 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals between the 15-19 October, 2025. 

The 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals are the jewel of the World Triathlon calendar and this landmark event is set to transform the New South Wales south coast into a global sporting hub, with Elite, U23, Junior, Para Triathlon and Age-Group athletes from across the globe battling for world championship titles in various distances.

The countdown is well and truly on, with the confirmation of valuable spots in Team Australia hinging on results from the final World Qualifying Event at this weekend’s Wollongong Triathlon Festival.

Event Director, Luke Palmer of Elite Energy Events, the local company producing the World Championships, is thrilled to welcome the world to Wollongong. 

'From a spectator's perspective, the event promises several days of world class sport not only showcasing the incredible talent of the world’s best triathletes but also highlighting the beauty and vibrancy of our city. Wollongong’s stunning coastal backdrop will provide a breathtaking stage for the swim, bike, and run legs, offering spectators the opportunity to witness the action up close, creating an electric atmosphere. Event organisers are working very closely with local authorities to ensure a seamless and memorable experience for all,” he said.

World Triathlon President, Antonio F. Arimany, said that with just six months to go, the anticipation is building for what promises to be an extraordinary World Triathlon Championships in Wollongong.

“As the newly elected President of World Triathlon, I am proud to see our premier event return to Australia, a nation with deep roots in the sport and an incredible triathlon community. From Elite and Para stars to passionate Age-Group athletes, Wollongong will provide the perfect stage to celebrate excellence, diversity and the global spirit of Triathlon,” he said.

The 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals are expected to deliver significant economic benefits to the Illawarra region with the influx of international and domestic visitors boosting local businesses, including hotels, restaurants and retail outlets. 

NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper said the NSW Government is proud to support the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals in Wollongong.

“This is a premier international event that will showcase the Illawarra’s natural beauty, vibrant culture and warm hospitality to a global audience. Through this event we aim to boost the local economy but also reinforce NSW’s reputation as Australia’s leading destination for world class sporting events.”

Member for Wollongong, The Hon.Paul Scully said, “I can’t think of a better place to hold the 2025 World Triathlon Championship Finals than Wollongong and it’s great to be part of Government that is supporting events like this in our area.”

Wollongong Lord Mayor, Councillor Tania Brown said the city has a well established reputation for hosting a wide range of international sporting events and is ready to welcome the athletes, their supporters and spectators.

“Wollongong is ready for this fantastic event and I have no doubt those coming from around Australia and across the world will be blown away by our beautiful beaches and foreshore area, the stunning escarpment and the city’s vibrancy of an evening.”

“While Wollongong is a great place year round, October is such a lovely time of year to visit, and the lucky locals who live here will be geared up and ready to watch the world’s best triathletes strut their stuff,’’ she said.

Australian Olympian Matthew Hauser believes that having the World Triathlon Championship Final back on Australian shores is exactly what we needed.

“I’ve experienced a major games and world championships here, and the atmosphere and support really does lift us Aussies. The countdown is on with six months to go and while the season is only just starting to heat up, I’m super pumped to take a shot at a world championship title come Wollongong,” he said

Australian Paralympic champion, Lauren Parker OAM, said having the World Triathlon Championships in Wollongong is an incredible moment for Australian sport.

“To compete on home soil, surrounded by family, friends and supporters, is something truly special. It’s not just a race, it’s a chance to inspire and to show the world the strength and spirit of our para and able-bodied triathlon community. I can’t wait to be part of it,” she said.
