The 2026 World Triathlon Monday Morning Mix: W1

Welcome back to the World Triathlon Monday Morning Mix! We are back for a brand-new season of international racing and a campaign that promises plenty. Look out for the in-depth previews that will drop very soon. This weekend the action kicked off with the opening World Triathlon Development Regional Cup of the year. Without further ado, let’s dive into what happened.

World Triathlon Development Regional Cup Formosa

Coming after a development training camp (pictured above), the first international race of 2026 was a sprint distance affair in Argentina. Gold in the men’s race went to Maximo Bautista Andino (ARG) after he cut loose on the 5km run to win by 61 seconds. Exiting T2, Andino had been alongside silver and bronze medallists, Jhon Mathias Tuesta Castro (VEN) and Santiago Boxler (ARG), but he out-split both by over a minute with a dominant run time of 16:31. This was Andino’s first international start.

Eliana Estefania Diaz (ARG) locked up gold in the women’s race with a similarly decisive move on the run. As was the case with Andino, Diaz started the final discipline in a select bunch with the eventual silver and bronze medallists for company. Maria Emilia Vargas (ARG) would put a minute into bronze medallist Catalina Moreno Velasco (COL) to seal 2nd place. However, she could not live with Diaz’s closing speed. Around the world

In Boston, USA, there was a 5km personal best for World Cup winner Reese Vannerson (USA). The 2024 World Junior Championships silver medallist rocked a time of 13:45 to serve a clear warning that his running form is shaping up nicely ahead of the new season.

Meanwhile, other big names were recently in action at Challenge Sir Bani Yas. Paris Olympian Jonas Schomburg (GER) took the tape ahead of WTCS gold medallist Pierre Le Corre (FRA) in the men’s race. The reigning double European champion Jolien Vermeylen (BEL) likewise kicked her year off at the event with a creditable 5th place in the women’s event.
