Saidia set to welcome top female triathletes for World Cup showdown

The World Triathlon spotlight turns to the stunning Moroccan coastline of Saidia this Sunday, June 29, as the town hosts its inaugural World Cup event. This Olympic distance race (1500m swim, 40km bike, 10km run) promises a fierce battle amongst a talented group of athletes eager to make their mark.

Saidia, a jewel of the Mediterranean coast, boasts pristine beaches and a welcoming atmosphere. Its golden sands and warm climate create a perfect setting for triathlon, offering athletes and spectators alike a memorable experience. The race will feature a beach start into the crystal-clear waters on a most likely non-wetsuit swim, followed by a multi-lap bike course and a flat, fast run along the scenic coastline.

Leading the start list is Italian veteran Verena Steinhauser. With an impressive 125 starts on the World Triathlon circuit and a consistent record of top-ten finishes, Steinhauser brings a wealth of experience to the race. Her teammate, Ilaria Zane, will also be vying for a strong performance, looking to improve upon her fourth-place finish in Samarkand just a month ago.

France's Sandra Dodet is another seasoned competitor with a proven track record at the World Cup level. With nine previous World Cup podiums to her name, Dodet is hungry to return to the top step this season. A strong cyclist and a swift runner, she will be a major threat if she enters T2 in a leading position.

Ainsley Thorpe (NZL) and Kira Hedgeland (AUS) will be aiming to leverage their strong swimming abilities and running prowess to make an impact. The duo will hope to be in contention as the race reaches its final stages.

Marta Pintanel and Noelia Juan will lead the charge for the Spanish team. Juan brings valuable experience racing in Morocco, having finished second at the 2023 World Cup in Tangier.

Marta Kropko (HUN) and Maria Casals (ESP) are also ones to watch. As will be veteran triathlete Barbara Riveros (CHI), a four-time Olympian, who is heading to Saidia fresh off claiming a bronze medal at this week's Cross Triathlon World Championships in Pontevedra.
