Election fever has hit triathlon. Exactly one month from election day, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) announced the nominees for its President, Secretary General, Vice Presidents, Treasurer, Executive Board and ITU Council.
With current President Les McDonald’s retirement at year’s end, ITU will have just its second President since its inception in 1989. More than 120 National Federations (NFs) will cast their ballots at ITU’s 21st Congress on Saturday November 29th in Madrid, Spain. McDonald was ITU’s founding President and is largely credited for triathlon’s inclusion in the Olympic Games. His successor on the election ballot is Marisol Casado of Spain, the current ITU Treasurer and President of the European Triathlon Union.
In an organizational change to ITU’s structure, the Executive Director title will change to Secretary General and will become an elected position. The job duties won’t change and current Executive Director Loreen Barnett of Canada will be unchallenged in the election for Secretary General.

The most heated battle will be for the Executive Board. Eleven prominent members of 11 different National Federations are running for seven spot on ITU’s Executive Board. Also to be elected are the seven committees that make up ITU Council. They include the Technical Committee, Medical Committee, Constitution Committee, Women’s Committee, Credentials Committee, and Duathlon Committee.

Key Dates:
ITU’s 21st Congress gets underway on November 26 with an Executive Board meeting and a welcome reception. Congress delegates will participate in a 2-day Federation Forum that includes workshop sessions on venue operations, media, marketing, and sport development. Congress and elections will be held on November 29.
According to Chapter 5 Congress, Article 5.3 (i): “The invitation to take part in Congress will include the agenda. It will be sent electronically and by ordinary mail at least 100 days before Congress (24 August 2008).”
According to Chapter 8 Resolutions, Article 8.1: “Resolutions to Congress must be received by ITU headquarters at least 60 days prior to Congress (30 September 2008).”
According to Chapter 10 Elections, Article 10.5 a): All candidates for election must submit, to ITU Headquarters, the nomination form signed by their NF President and Secretary, not later than 60 days (30 September, 2008) prior to the first day of Congress at which elections are scheduled.
La fiebre de las elecciones tambin llega al triatln. A exactamente un mes para el da de las elecciones, la Unin Internacional de Triatln (ITU) ha anunciado a los candidatos para Presidente, Secretario General, Vicepresidentes, Tesorero, Comit Ejecutivo y el Consejo de la ITU.
Con la retirada del actual Presidente Les McDonald al finalizar el ao, la ITU tendr a su segundo Presidente desde su origen en 1089. Ms de 120 Federaciones Nacionales (NFs) emitirn sus votos el 29 de Noviembre en Madrid, en el 21 Congreso de la ITU. McDonal fue el Presidente fundador de la ITU y en gran mediada el culpable de la inclusin del Triatln en los Juegos Olmpicos. Su sucesor en la votacin es la espaola Marisol Casado, la actual Tesorera de la ITU y Presidenta de la Unin Europea de Triatln.
En un cambio en la organizacin de la estructura de la ITU, el ttulo de Director Ejecutivo se cambiar por el de Secretario General y se tratar de un puesto electo. Las responsabilidades del trabajo no variarn y la actual Directora Ejecutiva, la canadiense Loreen Barnett no tendr oposicin en la eleccin para Secretaria General.

La lucha ms ferviente se dar para el Comit Ejecutivo. Once miembros provenientes de 11 Federaciones Nacionales diferentes pelean por siete plazas en el Consejo Ejecutivo de la ITU. Tambin se elegirn los siete comits que constituyan el consejo de la ITU. Incluyen el Comit Tcnico, Comit Mdico, Comit de estatutos, Comit de las Mujeres, Comit de credenciales y Comit de Duatln.

El 21 Congreso de la ITU se pondr en marcha el 26 de Noviembre con una reunin del Comit Ejecutivo y una recepcin de bienvenida. Los delegados del congreso participarn en un Forum durante dos das que incluirn talleres sobre montaje de eventos, medios de comunicacin, marketing y desarrollo deportivo. El congreso y las elecciones tendrn lugar el 29 de Noviembre.
De acuerdo al Captulo 5 del Congreso, Artculo 5.3 (i): La invitacin para participar en el Congreso incluir el programa. Ser enviada electrnicamente y por correo ordinario al menos 100 das antes del Congreso (24 Agosto del 2008).
De acuerdo al Captulo 8 Resoluciones, Artculo 8.1: Resoluciones al Congreso deben ser recibidas en la Oficina Central de la ITU al menos 60 das antes del Congreso (30 Septiembre de 2008).
