The Europe Triathlon Nordic Championships take place in Aarhus this weekend, with 46 athletes set to line up for the Elite Men’s race and 20 athletes competing in the Elite Women’s race. With strong fields assembled across both races, the battle for the Nordic title is set to be an exciting one.
Elite Men
Norway occupy the first three spots on the start list, led by Sebastian Wernersen. The Norwegian will be hoping to use his experience competing on the WTCS to his advantage, having finished inside the top 30 at the WTCS event in London in July.
Eirik Berling Grande claimed silver in Rzeszów in May before following that up with a top-ten finish in Elbląg. His consistent performances throughout the season put him among the athletes to watch in Aarhus.
Petter Ellingsbø completes the Norwegian trio at the front of the start list. The oldest of the three, Ellingsbø will be looking to use his experience to challenge for the title on Sunday.
Sweden also have several athletes capable of challenging at the front, with Andreas Carlsson among those to watch. Carlsson claimed silver at the Swedish National Championships in June, as well as another silver medal at the Sprint National Championships, and will now look to replicate that success on the international stage.
The athlete who finished ahead of Carlsson at the National Championships was Leon Dahlin, who has also competed in the Europe Triathlon Cup in Kitzbühel this season.
There will be plenty of support for the home athletes, with Denmark fielding 19 athletes for the championships. Tobias Gårde Skou leads the Danish contingent and will be hoping to make the most of racing in front of a home crowd. Skou has raced just once this season, finishing fourth at the Danish National Championships in May, so his limited racing could play a factor in Aarhus.
Frederick Bradley is another Danish athlete with a strong opportunity this weekend. Bradley has yet to race in a Europe Triathlon event during his senior career but comes into the race having claimed silver at this year’s Danish National Championships. That result improved on his bronze medal from last year and will give him confidence heading into his international debut.
Norway are also able to take advantage of the Nordic Championships, with 18 athletes set to take the start line. Several of those athletes will be making their international debuts, including Gabriel Meltevik and Tobias Nærum. Both athletes were born in 2011, making them the youngest athletes in the men’s field.
Elite Women
Clara Carlquist leads the Elite Women’s start list and will be one of the home favourites in Aarhus. The Dane will race in front of a home crowd for the first time since winning the National Sprint Championships in May.
Carlquist also claimed a top-ten finish in the U23 standings at the Sprint Championships in Elbląg. She has not raced since that event, but the opportunity to compete at home could provide extra motivation as she looks to challenge for the Nordic title.
Lærke Ruby is another Danish athlete to watch. Starting just behind Carlquist, Ruby has not raced since Holten at the beginning of July, but her second-place finish at the Danish National Championships will give her plenty of confidence as she looks to find success on home soil once again.
Ellie Hobbs will start with bib number three. Hobbs is currently in the process of changing her national representation to Sweden and has already shown strong form this season, racing in Holten and claiming a top-ten finish in Tășnad. She will be looking to build on those performances in Aarhus.
Hanna Månsson is one of the youngest athletes on the start list but has already enjoyed a strong season. The Swede claimed gold at the Swedish National Championships and added a bronze medal in Tiszaujváros, making her another athlete capable of challenging towards the front.
Finland will be represented by three athletes, led by Astrid Snäll. Snäll will make her first Europe Triathlon start of the year after two narrow misses for the podium at the Swedish and Finnish National Championships. She will be hoping to turn those close results into a podium finish in Aarhus.
With Denmark able to field such a strong home contingent and Norway also bringing a large team, the Nordic Championships provide an important opportunity for athletes to gain international experience.
Liv Frost Juhler (DEN), Ellen Fröjdö (FIN), Vera Nilsson (NOR) and Linnea Christiane Johansen Melø (NOR) are among the youngest starters in the women’s field. For Melø, the weekend will be particularly significant as she makes her first start at an international competition.
With a mixture of experienced athletes, national champions and young athletes making their international debuts, the Nordic Championships in Aarhus should provide plenty of intrigue across both Elite races.
