Kiwi triathlete Andrea Hewitt, 23 has just won the 2005 ITU Gamagori U23 Women’s world title. In only her fourth ever triathlon Hewitt sewed up the 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycle and 10 km run race race with a blistering final 5 km run.
The former New Zealand surf lifesaver was so far ahead of her rivals she had time to enjoy the moment, clapping spectators hands as she ran down the finish chute with a New Zealand flag in her arms.
Czech athlete Vendula Frintova finished second with Nicola Spirig, who competed for Switzerland at the Athlens Olympics was third.
It was New Zealands second medal of the day after Rebecca Spence won a silver earlier in the junior women’s race.
