IOC Prohibition on Olympic Betting

The IOC has been closely following developments in sports betting.

After consulting experts on the subject, and particularly the Olympic Movement stakeholders, in December 2006, the Executive Board approved a prohibition on all forms of participation in, support for or promotion of betting related to the Olympic Games (article A.5 of the IOC Code of Ethics).

This applies for the first time to all the participants (including the members of the NOC delegations and the International Federations) in the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing.

A monitoring system will be set up in Beijing with the technical support of EWS, a company linked to the sports movement.

If necessary, the IOC President may, as with doping cases, create a disciplinary commission to determine the nature and circumstances of any violation of this prohibition. If the Olympic Games participant concerned is an athlete, his or her NOC will automatically be informed.

The implementing provisions covering these situations are on the IOC web site.
