With World Cup wins already this season in Chengdu and Rome, Diana Isakova (RUS) made it three Cup golds for 2026 on Saturday morning, pulling another big finish out of the fire this time in Hong Kong to hold off Jeanne Lehair (LUX).
It had all come down to a four-way battle over the final stages of the 5km run between that pair, Anqi Huang (CHN) and Valentina Riasova (RUS). Isakova blasted clear, only for Lehair to come back into contention as they all battled for the finish line, with Huang eventually settling for bronze.
"I'm feeling great, very excited for my fifth World Cup win," said Isakova. "After a good training camp we look to push in every race and have a big finish to the season. I've been training hard for this process."
With the top-ranked athletes all taking to the left of the pontoon, it was Mathilde Gautier who made the fastest work of the 750m swim in Victoria Harbour, emerging up the steps alongside Isakova.
That pair had a small gap over Kanae Takenaka (JPN), Beth Cook (GBR), Cecilia Santamaria and Zuzana Michalickova (SVK), with Lehair 13 seconds back. However, the leaders were quickly hoovered up by the chasers on the first of the five bike laps.
Matilda Offord (AUS) came down on lap one but continued despite heavy road rash. She was too far back to have any further impact on the race, however, as a huge group soon came together out front.
Only Rosa Maria Tapia, Mathilde Gautier and Emma Jeffcoat looked like making any real move to break clear, and the riders would eventually settle in for what would always be a fast and demanding 5km shootout for the medals on foot.
Despite the heavy traffic, there were few troubles in the second transition. Lehair was slightly snarled up but soon picked her way back onto the shoulders of Verena Steinhauser, Gautier, Isakova and Eve Whittaker, with Cook and Maria Casals also going well early on.
Athletes were gradually shelled off the back as the pace picked up at the bell, with Lehair taking to the front with 1km to go but unable to shake off her closest rivals.
Then Riasova moved to the front before a big charge from Huang, only for Isakova and Lehair to dig in and make a final surge, the Russian taking the tape by the narrowest of margins.
Riasova had to settle for fourth, with Cook earning a career-best fifth. Gautier finished sixth, Heidi Jurankova (CZE) produced a strong finish for seventh, and Casals, Steinhauser and Iana Cheskaia (RUS) rounded out the top 10.

"I didn't want fourth today, Im not usually a good sprinter so I quite impressed myself!" said Lehair. "I believed maybe I could win but my line was closed so I moved to the left, but she has a strong sprint finish. It was tough for a few weeks after Pontevedra, I was really disappointed and frustrated and needed to digest that race but I have felt good the last weeks and i'm really looking forward to Abu Dhabi."
"I am very happy to be on the podium again and very clear I still have a long way to go, I hope that next year I can be even better," said Huang. "I want to compete against the best and learn from them. I have improved a lot on the bike but I also want to improve my swim."
